Ditto. I have some relatives there. It is probably as good as Hong Kong. But Vancouver doesn't have a team now. So we can scratch that as one of Ming's potential "defection destination."

BTW, is Ming's English good enough to read posts on this board? Maybe he will after a few months in the US.

I read that and about laughed my tail off. Rudy's brain must be fried from the 97-100 degree summers with 40-70% humidity. Spring... more like bubbling springs of lava and steam.

 

If Ming develops a reliable hook shot, the league may disallow it in a couple of years? How on Earth are you supposed to stop a 7-6 man with a hook shot?

A few thoughts...

First, HUGE thanks to Lil for that wonderfully translated article. That has to be the best translation of a Chinese article I've read on this BBS so far, nothing whatsoever against our other Chinese, Chinese-American posters for their contributions, to whom I'm also very grateful.

It just gets more and more exciting hearing what the Rockets coaching staff plans are for Yao. I'm so pumped, and I agree that Rudy has the right approach.

I thought Rudy's quote about not caring about shots and rebounds was funny. Was anyone else thinking Mo Taylor when they read that?

I also thought it was funny that Rudy wanted to convey his "trustworth[iness]" to Yao, and then went on to say how Houston has "excellent public transportation." Hmmmm..., you sound like a politician, Rudy. Seriously, I think Yao is lucky to have Rudy as a coach (of course).

Arrrrghh, I need to get a TV.

sorry about the number of errors in the translation. typed too fast. didn't proof-read. what i get for translating off the cuff and having people scream at me to run errands. Chinese is a beautiful language and it permits rapid literal translations because its grammatical structure is nearly identical to English and its vocabulary is just as rich and constantly evolving.

However there were several unfamiliar terms in there like:

"carry it over" - which i translated as "stupidly take it in" (when Yao was faced with double-teams) - upon reflection, I think Rudy probably said "Yao Ming didn't turn it over" which was either misunderstood by the reporter or by me (cuz maybe that's how they say "turnover" in China?)

"running movement" - which i translated as "movement w/o the ball" (which Rudy repeated emphasized) - wasn't really sure what the reporter meant by this, but i had initially thought along the lines of "athleticism" or "speed" or "motion/stance", but the context made it pretty clear to be something related to moving without the ball. I didn't think of Mo Taylor so much as I thought of Boki, cuz isn't that what Rudy said impressed him most about Boki's play: his uncanny ability to maneuver into the post for easy buckets? I think MoTay could learn some serious lessons from Boki in that department...

"move through any region of the court" - which i translated as "traverse any zone on the court" - wasn't really proper, cuz i doubt Rudy had anything related to zone defense in mind, but probably meant "We'll play him anywhere we need on the court, because damn it HE CAN!"

For W&S, Panda, Michecon, and other Chinese BBSers, if you guys see any other errors, please let me know. I don't read simplified Chinese script all that well, so your corrections will definitely help me for next time. Cheers!
