it's funny you post that picture, i was talking with my friend yesterday that i remember my first couple years of little league where our coaches had their cooler of coors out there with them while they were running practice. it was just our first practice. i'm completely new to this, so i just kinda listened to madmax and took his lead. he and i worked with the infielders while a buddy of mine (fellow khs grad) and another volunteer helped out with outfield drills. some of the kids hadn't ever played so that's a challenge in and of itself. this isn't your typical little league team. it's a group of kids who are mostly underprivileged in some way that wouldn't have the chance to play little league without the support of madmax' church. they help with the registration costs, uniform costs, rides to/from games and practices, etc. a lot of these kids don't have a father figure in their life, so just being around these kids as a positive influence is a good thing. we're there to teach them how to play the game and how to play it right - with respect, cooperation and determination. it's seriously not about winning, but how you play the game. that said, when my buddy and i coach basketball next season, we're going undefeated.
Good for you and MadMax. Being a positive influence in a kids life is a great thing to do and so many kids are lacking that now days. A lot of things turn me off about organized religion but when MadMax talks about his church and the way they try to do things, I can't help but think that they are going about things the right way and for the right reasons.
too many churches are worried about putting butts in their seats and building huge "stadiums" to accomodate that. i think that's the wrong thing to be worried about. we spun off a nonprofit that does this with sports leagues (we coached about 55 kids in hoops...about 50 kids in baseball this season...about 30 or so in soccer in the fall)...we send about 40 to a summer camp....we host a summer sports camp...and we do homework help after school in the schools. basically, we just went to the principals of 2 local schools and said, "what do you need us to do?" they fed the ideas from their needs. RM95 - your help is HUGELY appreciated!!! thanks so much!
That is awesome stuff. Keep up the good work. I know it will make a big difference to the kids you are helping.
When you're feeling down, one of the best things you can to do make yourself feel better is to help someone else. ESPECIALLY kids. Funny how that works, isn't it? It's always a great way to keep things in perspective.
In a community where these kids get labelled as "the apartment kids." Where the affluent typically expresses desires to get these kids out of their schools. I'm hopeful that the stuff we're doing will affect more than just these kids..but also the community around them. We've seen some evidence of that. We're in year 3 now.
