Bob Sanders might not have handled the situation well at all, but he's NOT the only one who needs to grow up here. The journalist could have EASILY let bygones be bygones, and done the responsible thing by writing an article that still detailed the donation that was given. Instead, he decided to take the lowest of low roads, and take attention AWAY from Sanders' philanthropy, and turn it instead to something completely unrelated, i.e. his contract and his injuries. This writer is a complete tool bag.

...it's a column. It's the writer's forum. He's not turning it into a "story about himself." He's writing his column. Why would you fire a columnist for writing a column?

This guy needs thicker skin if he's going to survive as a journalist.

maybe i'm crazy, but i think the article is fine

Sanders is in the public eye. He certainly doesn't have to give out numbers he doesn't want to. He doesn't have to interview if he doesn't want to. Some of the things the writer complains about are stupid--they are Bob's rights also.

But for Sanders to be a jerk on a public stage is dumb. Yes, people write about your injuries, your contract, and the number of games you've played (or not played) in. It's their job...let them do it. You chose to play a sport that is in the news and the public eye all the time.. now deal with it properly.

It was really classless to ask how much his charitable contribution to the school was during his visit there. That isn't cool at all.

From the piece I have no problem with the reporter asking the questions he asked. I think it is a relevant question regarding how much the donation cost. That said the reporter does seem like a dick though for saying he's going to take away his son's jersey to sell on E-Bay so someone can line their birdcage with it.

Not really. That's part of the story. Sanders giving away $20 grand worth of computers? That's news. Sanders giving away $200 worth of computers? Not news. Sanders giving away $200 grand worth of computers? FRONT PAGE news. The amount matters. If Sanders didn't wish to publicize the amount, he should have said, "I'd prefer to keep that private," and then told the reporter off the record.

I found the column whiny, but clearly Sanders has a history in Indy, possibly with this writer in particular. Perhaps it makes more sense in the context of religiously following the Colts, I don't know. I'm not sure why the writer thought Sanders would want to chat at length about his contract or health at a photo op like this, but I don't know either man. Maybe it's a burning issue in Indy and this was the only place they could track him down.

perhaps it's nobody's business how much he spent on the computers. Perhaps the writer should thank Sanders for donating the computers as opposed to being petty and asking how much he spent.

It's rude to ask someone a question like that. He should just be happy that Sanders is giving back to the community...it is meaningless as to how much he spent in doing that, and the fact that the author actually RESENTS him for that is so freaking ridiculous.

If I donated a ton of stuff to charity, I would be pissed if someone asked me what I spent.

This. Sanders probably should have handled the situation better, but asking how much his charitable donation to a school was WHILE he was there is classless like you said.

I don't think the article was all that bad, but the writer definitely sounds like a crybaby.

Wow, youre way off here bud...the story is that these kids get a computer lab. The cost is irrelevant. Doesnt matter if he bought them Sony monitors or something else...fact of the matter is that these kids are now better off than they were before Sanders donated. If you think it matters whether he spent 10K or 15K...or if you think it matters what his contract is, then I really feel bad for the people that have to read or listen to what you report.

Just sent this in to the editorial section of the paper, and to the author of the article.

    -------------------------------------------------
I was reading on GoErie.com and came across your article about Bob Sanders. Now, I just recently moved to Erie, and I am actually a fan of the Houston Texans, thus I despise the Colts, so I'm here to offer you an impartial opinion.

This article was absolute trash. It was one of the most egotistical, whiny, and unprofessional articles I've ever seen written by a supposed "professional." I am ashamed to call myself a citizen of this city that I love if that's the way we're going to treat someone who comes home to show support for it. I ask myself this question, when was the last time the author of this article donated computers to a school in need?(And no, I don't care how much the computers he donated cost...much like 90% of the people I've asked)

To go as far as to say he's going to take a jersey of his son's favorite player out of his closet and sell it, why, I can't even say very much about that. That's just bad parenting, I guess. And a bit of jealousy, maybe.

It seems like everything that I've read about Bob Sanders shows that the guy has risen from humble beginnings to where he is today, and that he's proud to show respect to the community he grew up in. I can't imagine how he feels when he sees representatives of this city bashing him the next day in the paper over what was a completely inappropriate question. (Not that he cares that much, because reading the article that Mr. Dudley wrote, it seems that the two do not exactly see eye to eye, and I think Sanders is the bigger man.)

If you want to know how much the donation cost the man, ask him in private. I recognize maybe that's "part of your story," but part of your code of ethics, I would think is professionalism, and asking him that question there in that library in front of school officials isn't exactly something that I would deem as appropriate.

I hope that Mr. Dudley has apologized for his childish article to a philanthropic local icon. But after reading that article, I don't expect it.

    ----------------------

It could have been better, more well-written and long-winded, but I'm getting kind of tired.

I'm still pissed off about this though...

I think that's a good response. I wonder if you'll get any kind of response from the paper.
