I, for one, was curious as to why the Astros only got the Mets 3rd round pick when they signed Beltran. For example, they received the Rockies 1st round pick when Kile was signed.

Jason Stark explained the situation in his column today:

"Draft-pick compensation for lost free agents was almost dropped in the last labor deal. Well, it's time to either kill it in the next one or revamp it so it makes some sense.

How can the Astros be getting just a third-round pick (and a sandwich pick) for losing Carlos Beltran – while the Yankees will get a first-rounder for Jon Lieber (who didn't even play in one of the two seasons covered by the free-agent rating system)?

The official explanation is that the Mets finished in the bottom half of the standings – so they can't be forced to give up a first-rounder for any free agent. And since Pedro Martinez was rated higher than Beltran, the Red Sox get the Mets' second-round pick while Houston gets stuck with their third-rounder.

The Phillies, meanwhile, finished in the top half of the standings. So the rules say they lose a No. 1 even if they sign a Type B free agent like Lieber. Bizarre."

That's BS, IMO. We gave up our #1 pick for Kent and don't get one back for Beltran. I can't beleive Boston got a second rounder after they just won the world series.

One thing i have always wanted to see, is teams being able to trade draft picks in baseball. They have a million of them anyways. It could make it easier for teams to make trades if their farm system is down like our's currently is.

I also hate that "player to be named later" stuff after a trade goes down also, i'd rather just see a specific draft pick.

Goes to show you how corrupt Bud Selig and the baseball system is. It's all about the big market teams, that's why there's no salary cap. We got screwed, Drayton McClane and Tim Purpura should call out the commisioner to the media so this type of stuff will get noticed.

Here are some quotes from a thread on the Mets team page regarding Beltran. The thread is entitled "Beltran 0 and 4 as a met".

    http://forums.espn.go.com/espn/thread?forumID=425&threadID=1572465&lastPostID=8551419

That first quote was spot on. I like the way this is all going down...stros winning and mets losing. Perfect.
