I think Powell's role as as the Administration's fig leaf enabled a lot more damage than his "voice of moderation" was able to prevent. I mean what was actually moderated. What more would the Administration have done if he wasn't there.
Republicans are racist sexist homophobes. All of those, however, go out the window when the person in question lies to protect the President. I guess covering Dubya's butt supercedes everything, eh?

We'll get an idea of that after he's left, and whenever he writes his memoirs. I suspect Powell attempted to moderate a great deal of Admistration foreign policy behind the scenes. Was he listened to? Sadly, the results speak for themselves. I don't disagree with the "fig leaf" analogy, to a certain extent. Frankly, I bet it drove Powell nuts.
