Translation: I started this thread after the second period of a four period game so I am now trying to rationalize it.............. If you've followed the history of this series at all, Marbury has ALWAYS tried to make it personal one on one battle between him and Steve (some bitterness over the all star game). Steve, on the advice of his coaches (remember what JVG sadi to him after kidd did the same thing? he threatened to bench him) has INTENTIONALLY declined to turn the game into a 1 on 1 personal grudge match (there was an article about this after the second phoenix game last year).......and look at the results: 4 straight victories. Again, who's winning this "duel?" [/B][/QUOTE] I was thinking this long before the game started last night. It had nothing to do with what happened after the second period. I wish Francis would start taking it to Marbury. Personally I think he needs to start kicking Marbury's arse because it's going to get alot harder for Francis to make the all-star team now with the emergance og Tony Parker and Ginobili, and now that Payton's in the spotlight again in LA. Francis has alot more competition for that all-star spot now with Marbury playing well, but if he doesn't get the nod this year then at least bring us a championship.
Until last year, SF always won more games than Marbury. It's back to normal this year. So what if Marbury can outplay Francis head to head? I remember Seattle had Hakeem's number back in Hakeem's prime. But who has the rings?
Let's face it. Marbury outplayed SF in one on one. But we start to double team Marbury at the 2nd half. It was JVG who outsmart Marbury.
Let's not face it since it isn't what happened. In the first half Marbury was on fire. Sometimes it was against Steve, most of the time it was against Moochie, but it was part of Marbury's own ego-driven quest to best Steve because Marbury wasn't the starter on the all star game. In the second half they didn't double team Marbury. They kind of trapped him, by Steve playing super D on him forcing him toward the middle where Yao or Cato would close in and Marbury had to pass. It worked beautifully and Steve played far superior defense in the second half. That was the best defense that I've seen Steve play, and it shut Marbury down. The second half was also when Francis did most of his damage and helped lead his team to the victory. Looking at stats - maybe Marbury won the match-up. Having watched the game it was clear that Steve was the better player last night, and did what it took for his team to win. If anyone was punked last night, it wasn't the guy who shut his oppenent down at crunch time, while he himself came to life, played harder, and made the baskets and defensive stops when it counted. If you would like to argue about what would happen if the two guys did go one on one that's another thread, and I'd say it would be a draw, or maybe Steve would win. I don't think either guy would be able to stop the other that much, but judging from Steve's defense on Stephon last night, I'd give the edge to Francis.
There are some differences between Francis and Marbury. The Phoenix suns are only Stephon. Their play is based simply on Stephon. P&R for him, plays for him... The Rockets play for Yao. Stephon Marbury is always with the ball on the suns offense. Steve not. He must move the ball to Yao or Cut. Stephon is touching the ball on 1 of every 3 passes of the Suns' offense. Steve can touch only one ball in a single possesion. Besides, is true that Stevie has started to play defense with Marbury at the 2nd half. On the first half he doesn't played defense, like very times, against Marbury or any other point guard. Only when the other team is coming though, he starts to play defense. Rocks 9 down at halftime. On the 2nd half he has started to play though and that's a rockets win. But.... francis 1 assist. Reasons?? 1. Balls to Yao, easy shot and.. no basket. 2. No fastbreaks. 3. On the 2nd half he started to be aggresive, and he attempted shots... that he made. 4. On the first half, nobody amde the shots. 5. On this Rockets offense, is difficult give assists for a PG. He starts the plays, but he doesn't give the last pass, the assist. But I think that with Taylor, Pike and Eddie, he will improve his assists. 6. Phoenix very good defense.
I would want to see Steve Francis on the Suns. Imagine it. Steve always with ball. With the total-control of the team. Doing whatever he likes. Shooting, passing, dribbling.... Now, imagine his stats on the Suns. Would be incredibles. For that you can't compare the Francis stats with the stephon stats.
AI doesn't have to give the ball up to a certain player every time he goes down the floor. Neither does marbury. They get the ball in their hands and they create. Steve doesn't get to do that any more, but he relied more on his team and we won.
I'd like to extend an invitation for "Starbury" to continue his little personal grudge against Steve for as long as he'd like. It's been working out nicely for the Houston Rockets, the only team that matters.
Well then, you are a hipocrite. All you saw was that Marbury scored 33 points while steve scored 26 pts. But almost all of Marbury's points came in the first half when moochie the ,defensive specialist, was gaurding him. But when it really counted, Marbury choked. He scored 4 points in the second half, not including those lay-ups and the end, when they didnt matter. Stev on the other hand, scored, and did everything when it really counted, thus resulting in a rox win.
I only saw one time marbury shut Steve down in friday's game but didn't Steve blow past him and dunked on Shawn Marion? which was real nasty by the way..Oh yeah Steve got 26 points, I don't think Steve is scared of Marbury. I mean this is basketball WTF is there to be scared of?
I am still laughing at Francis crossing up Marbury and dunking on Marions dome! Classic Franchise stuff. Whoever made this thread possible should be shot. That person has no clue basketball is a team sport. Go Rox!
Steve and Stephon are very similar players with Step a yr or 2 ahead of Steve in his career. This thread is about the head to head competition, and Stephon is ahead right now. If we say we don't care because the Rockets win, then it is something else. One could easily digress and talk about how the Suns made the play-off instead of the Rockets. In fact, it was Stephon who made the Suns go. If he was 100% last year, they could possibly eliminate the Spurs.
I am sure Steve could have out gunned Marbury if he liked, but it wasn't part of the game plan. A win is a win and the only punk is Marbury when the season comes to a close and they fall out of play-off position cause of his b*tch ass!
It seems to me our guards switched roles with Cat getting the asists and Steve the points. I don't think Marbury and Penny do that and that's why they are losing. We adjusted to their weaknesses, clamped down on D at the right time, and deployed our players in a way to set the Suns...
