He was also a proponent of decriminalization, but never saw it through.

You are among the VAST majority of pot smokers. Virtually nobody has ever "ruined their life" over mar1juana and there has never been a single documented case of mar1juana actually killing someone.

Most pot smokers are otherwise law abiding, responsible, taxpaying members of society and do not belong behind bars.

    Now I'm an "assclown"?

Congrats on being added to the list of people here, who when someone doesn't have the same line of thinking, resorts to juvenile name calling.

And not all drugs are bad. Some serve their purpose and are not just used to get high.

    You are a class act.

Decriminalization is like deciding to switch from driving in the left lane, to the right lane. Only instead of doing it all once, you first transfer the big trucks to see how that works, and later consider transfering cars and other vehicles.

Kind of a stretch of an analogy, but I agree with you that decrim is not the answer. The only thing that will move us toward resolution of the drug problems in this country is regulation of sales.

To be honest with you, you wouldn't be called these names if you would argue with facts and evidence rather than slogans and cliches. Just some constructive criticism.

My own personal pet peeve :) Don't pay it much mind.

The analogy is that some say decriminalization is a step towards legalization. We don't want it legal...but lets not prosecute. Certainly, decriminalization would lessen the injustices of criminal records, and overly harsh penalties for users who really were not doing too much harm.

My contention is that the problem is the dealers. Decriminalization lessens the risk to them and their customers -- yet doesn't address the overriding issue of lessening the harm to communities that the dealers cause.

So...if we want to legalize (which i think we should), we should take the plunge. Start driving on the right side of the road. Let's not do it gradually, in steps. Just prolongs the transition -- and, i think, often creates as much harm as good.

I may be alone on this

Extremely good point, one on which you are absolutely correct.

The only way to solve the issues with drug dealers is to make sure that only legitimate businesses and the government are responsible for distributing these drugs, preferably after educating the potential users about the risks of such behavior.

Not now, it's been evident for a while.

    Thank you.

To say kids shouldn't be smoking pot is considered a cliche now?

The title of this thread mentioned minors. I never said anyone advocated kids smoking dope. I simply said I wish no kids would smoke pot, legal or not.

That is my point. If we were to regulate mar1juana, we could create a system that would make it between difficult and impossible for kids to acquire. That is the ONE OVERRIDING PRINCIPLE that I want our drug policy to have. The number one goal is to get drugs (and in my mind, alcohol too) out of the hands of our children. If we do that, then we stand a far better chance of reaching potential addicts through education BEFORE they begin experimenting with drugs.

We are talking about having a chance at ACTUALLY reducing drug use, as opposed to the pipe dreams that we have today.

No, that is simply a goal that cannot be met through prohibition.
