Analogous to distant swimming events would be 5 minute, 10 minute, etc games. More chances for an upset I would guess. And we wouldn't have to wait 40 minutes for an obvious blowout.
The Olympics lasts 2 weeks. You can't have too many teams or there won't be enough time to play games. You can probably add a few teams and tweak the format a bit, but there's not a lot of leeway. As it stands, with an every other day schedule, the Men's final takes place on the last day of the Olympics.
Who would train for those other events? I think its as much about the athlete professions as it is about the events. Part of the allure of the competitions is that the athletes spend considerable amount of time in preparation for them. Yes national basketball teams don't play together year round. But 5v5 team basketball is still their main profession. Even the simple events like shooting and weighlifting, those take long grueling hours to train for. Would anyone take Kyle Korver being the 3 point gold medal winner seriously when there's not even an event for that anytime else? Not to mention a no-namer guy.
To add (since this is a duplicate post lol) They don't even have baseball as an event anymore. Personally I wouldnt some international home run derby, maybe extract some skills challenges from other sports. But there's plenty athletes who only have one shot at a medal. Part of the Olympic story is you might NOT get redemption.
It's the Olympics. The Olympics were made to showcase traditional sports like you would have seen back when they first began. We're lucky basketball is even in it. Don't make the Olympics too modern. It'll ruin it.
Have you not seen an All-Star game??? Why does it have to be the Olympics?? Dude, we got our own basketball festival for a weekend, screw the Olympics...
This isn't the all-star game, it's the olympics. You get 82 basketball games a year. How often do you watch swimming or track & field?
No, they shouldn't add more basketball events. IMO, anything that has a judging (subjective) component has no place there. If you can't time it, measure it, or otherwise objectively determine a winner/loser, it shouldn't be there.
