If our top guys are busy with the regular basketball tournament, I wonder if other countries would use their top players in the 3 on 3 instead if they feel that gives them a better shot at a gold medal.

What we need to have is one on one at the NBA all-star game. Kobe vs lebron.

It would be better if each country allowed multiple teams like synchronized swimming. That way the best USA guys could go up against each other.

Good point. The scheduling is going to be the question with adding 3-on-3. Teams have a lot of downtime during the Olympics, but would a 20 min or first-to-20 3-on-3 half court game really make those guys tired if they played on their off days? I wouldn't think so.

I say schedule for the first week and have the final before the quarter finals so the stars can be rested for the important games.

I doubt you'll get the NBA or any foreign basketball league to sign on to this due to injury risk (on concrete too...)

...which is totally fine. It will most likely be D-leaguers or retired NBA'rs or Globetrotter/And-1 types playing.

FIBA has actually staged int'l 3-on-3 tourneys before in Asia, FWIW.

This is great news for Kobe, now there's only 2 teammates he won't pass to instead of 4.

All the teams sports had pretty much the same format. Play every other day, pool play and then knockout rounds. The basketball tournament took a full 2 weeks as did regular volleyball. Beach volleyball was only slightly shorter at 12 days. Soccer with it fireman, one day on-two days off, schedule took 16 days and had to start before the opening ceremonies.

I'd expect 3 on 3 to kind of work like beach volleyball. Games to 21 going by one (two points for a "3"). Best 2 out of 3 wins. Maybe an abbreviated 3rd game to 15.

EDIT: Since FIBA actually does this already, they use 2 5-minute periods and a 12 second shot clock. First team to 33 wins. If nobody reaches 33 points, the team with the most points at the end of regulation wins.

10 minute games don't sound too bad.

It doesn't mention it in the article, but this new 3-on-3 Olympic event would not include any NBA players.

It would only include people playing in the sanctioned 3-on-3 leagues.

Sounds stupid to have rec league guys in the Olympics, I know, but that's their plan.

And, like beach volleyball, it shouldn't be indoors. Should be on blacktop/cement courts, with chain nets (for a better swish sound), next to beach's or in urban playgrounds, and they flip a coin to see whose basketball is used.

I'd rather watch HORSE though, actually.

Stupid call IMO and i would not support a U23 system either. Olympics is supposed to be fittest, strongest and fastest. Its the best of the best. If they look at compromising the game of basketball by making it U23 or 3 on 3 then it should be wiped from the Olympics all together.

they should classify basketball events according to height like what they do to with weight in boxing, weightlifting, judo, etc because lets face it, height is might in basketball. a usa team composed of 6'5" and below players will not beat a spanish team that has no height limit. talent is important but height is equally important. that will really increase the number of golds available and will give a fighting chance for nations who have the talent but not the height to compete in basketball.

I'd rather it be 2-on-2, but that's still good. Put it outside with chain nets!

I'd watch 3-on-3 Olympic Basketball for about 12 minutes which is 12 minutes more Olympic Basketball than I've watched since 1996. It would be good for the sport I feel, I'll give it that.

Should add a dunk contest and three pointer contest. Would give other countries a chance since it's something they could build up to. Also maybe consider a 21 tournament where people must represent themselves. and it's a one player take all system.
