Both of these guys are idiots. I'm willing to give Soulja Boy more of a pass since he's a kid and seems to be getting attacked a lot. The bottom line for many artists, whether they be rappers or not, is making money. People might not wanna hear that, but I think it's true. Soulja Boy is a kid who's making lotsa money. There is obviously a market for the kind of music he makes. Even though Ice T did make an album called Cop Killer and now he plays a cop on Law & Order, he's doing what he has to do to make money. I don't like Soulja Boy's music nor Ice T's music and mediocre acting so I don't watch/listen to them. So if you don't like them either and hate one or the other, I would suggest just not listening to them.

Everytime I hear Soulja Boy, it reminds me how glad I am I got an education. I swear I need the Rosetta Stone to figure out what in the hell he's saying - are they even words? It's like he tied his tongue to his wrist and was then told to sing.

That being said, this stuff is funny because it happens every decade. The stuff Soulja Boy puts out is more akin to early rap (pre-NWA, pre-Public Enemy, etc) than anything Lupe Fiasco, Nas, etc. put out. Nowadays rap has to have meaning for some reason - if it doesn't have some deep-rooted purpose, it's junk. I don't get that. I love Lupe Fiasco's work and think he's among the best artists out there and prefer him to Soulja Boy, but if you want to go old school is better, then what are you going to tell me next? LL Cool J and the fact he can't live without his radio was deep lyricism? Was the Sugar Hill Gang solving the world's problems with "Rapper's Delight"? Did Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" educate inner city kids somehow? All NWA did was create controversy by killing and raping people in their lyrics. What did the Fat Boys add to rap other than let people know they couldn't afford a damn drum set and had eating disorders? The Beastie Boys' Licensed To Ill album? Uuuhh - one of the greatest rap albums ever released, but what statement did it make other than they liked to party and get drunk? How about RUN DMC? "Hey RUN, you say something, and I'll just echo the last word with you. It'll be a hit!!" Doug E Fresh? Six minutes... six minutes... Young MC? One of the best, most thought-out set of rap lyrics ever in "Bust A Move", but what everlasting principles did he provide to the "rap community"? Hmm...

The fact is, most of these artists are considered legendary and important contributors to the art of rap. I'm not saying Soulja Boy is in their league, either, but, for the most part, the roots of rap were nothing more than what Soulja Boy is doing - a bunch of party lyrics that made people get up, dance, and act a fool...

That being said, I hope I never hear another Soulja Boy lyric again...listening to a presidential debate backwards may make more sense.

Kanye made some good agreeable points here. This is where he should have ended it.
    But...
And this has been my issue with Kanye from the start. He just has to keep talking, about whatever.

He was a feel good story at first with "Through the Wire". Then he kept on talking...He did "Jesus Walks" for some more feel good. Then he opened his mouth saying the president doesnt care about black people...now Soulja Boy is Nas-like, and cited TWO instances how he was like Nas? He didnt say he was as GOOD as Nas, but thats like saying Soulja Boy has studied the ways of Immortal Technique for use in some of his other work.

soulja boy should be grateful commercialism has for the most part subdued the raw aspects of rap. mouthing of like this would get you killed FOR SURE some years back, especially for someone who doesnt have a posse he moves around with (those 2 homeboys behind you wont cut it)

Old ass n***a ----lol, great insult.

Anyways, I side with Solja Boy here even though I don't really like his music. People like Ice-T are always complaining about how this isn't true hip hop. But how many artists today actually do true hip hop anymore these days that actually sell records? Back then it was all gangsta rap which had a negative influence on the inner city youth. Nowadays its more fun, beat based music. Old schoolers like Ice-T need to realize things evolve and change. Whether it be for the better or worse, you can't sit around reminiscing about how things were better in the day.

If Ice-T wants to bring back true rap, why doesn't he release a new album out that's worth listening to?

Plus Ice-T should have zero credibility because he is now just a pawn for the man since he is acting on prime time television. How is that keepin' it real?

Uh...see you might be right about the whole purpose thing, but at least early hip hop made an effort to be coherent and intelligeble...seriously. Comparing that to Soulja Boy on any level is really kinda've an insult to those who pioneered hip hop.

Sure. Let's talk about how intelligible Biz Markie was... "Oh babuh ooooooo gawt wut I neeeeed. Butchoo say he jus a fren." :D Anywho, the point isn't about coherent and intelligible - it obviously can't be for everybody anyway because if it were, Soulja Boy wouldn't sell. It's about selling. The Fat Boys and Doug E Fresh did percussion with their mouths for crying out loud and drew attention - older folks thought they were idiots back then. Back then, the outcry was the music really says nothing, it was misogynistic, irrelevant, unapproachable, and a bunch of blabbering about nothing. And guess what? For every Public Enemy and KRS ONE, there was a Fat Boys or Bobby Jimmy - we'd point to the relevance of the former and how the latter was making a mockery of the art.

I agree with you in that Soulja Boy is barely understandable and even said so, as well did I say that in no way am I putting Soulja Boy on a pedestal with Run DMC or the others I mentioned. MC Hammer was blasted for the very same thing by "old school" rappers and fans, yet MC Hammer entertained like no other rapper probably ever has. People didn't listen to his rap for deep meaning - they liked to watch the guy dance. Sounds familiar to Soulja Boy and his dance.

What I'm saying is that every decade/generation of rap, we seem to say today's rap sucks or you have to go "underground" to get some of the best rap, yet I've heard the same thing for the past 2-3 decades!

Now I'm not a fan of either's music, but I did listen to both and I have to say that Soulja Boy did make some good points (in between all the attacks).

If Ice T really felt that way, then he should do something about it, like Soulja boy said. Drop an album. Mentor some young rappers, whatever. Telling Soulja boy to go suck a dick is uncalled for and hey, guess what, doesnt bring rap back to life.

I don't know or care about any of this, but what I DO know is that Ice T's wife is HIDEOUSLY ugly. Seriously, that thing looks like it’s from another planet.

This makes no sense at all. So now you're a thugged out video gamer?

Atlanta killed rap? Some of the best rappers that still put out good music are from Atlanta. Young Jeezy, TI, Ludacris, Outkast, Young Joc.

I have to side with Kanye on this one. I think the song is stupid, but he's like 19 years old and already made millions and had about ten million kids dancing like artards.
