meggoleggo.. cool 2002 here.. kam.. i think cyfair was actually built in the 40s sadly enough.. thank goodness for that renovation that im guessing meggoleggo missed barely
I graduated from Cy-Fair in 92. They actually have had several renovations. They did one in the early 80s. Then, in the late 80s, they found they had a huge asbestos problem, so they renovated again. Within the last few years, they redid the front of the school too. Finn, I used to play at Treeline alot about 8 years ago. Its still around (corner of Eldridge and Spring Cypress).
I missed most of it.... But they closed down a bunch of crap my senior year.... I remember having English in what used to be the 400 hall, and half the time during the spring semester, we couldn't hear anything cuz of construction. I've been back to visit, and I get lost half the time.... BTW, CF started as a 1 room school in 1884, and the first graduating class from Cypress high school was 3 seniors in 1935, and then in 1940 Cypress HS and Fairbanks HS were consolidated, hence the name.
Did anyone attend Bellaire High School? That is probably the most historic high school I have ever been to. Every senior class takes a panoramic picture that they put up in trophy cases. You can take a walk down the hall starting from the 40's (?) to now. Good stuff.
Those are excellent thanks! It's amazing how much everything has changed. Also, I really like the old black/white pictures of downtown Houston that you can see in some of the courthouses and older buildings downtown. I'd love to get some of those for my house. There is a very cool picture I saw once that showed water flooding most of downtown, very odd looking.
I can say that with all honesty...out here where I am at...It would take me about 3 minutes to get to the nearest huge pasture where there are lots of cows and horses. I actually remember going out to the new stadium(Astrodome) in the early 70's and there wasnt anything to the south of there worth talking about. Not now.. great find smokey...thanks
Who does KF call their Drill team? I know that CyFalls call theirs the Cy-Falls Sky Dancers. I always thought that was stupid. Who was built first? KF, or CF? And is KF three storys tall? My two little nephews are future KF Eagles. Class of uhh 2015? I don't know
Ok, Kam, Meggoleggo, and Codell. Some of you guys are a little off on your dates about Cy-Fair and the Cy-Fair ISD. I came from the class of '79 and here is the real history of the school. In 1884, a one-room school was built, which was named Big Cypress School House, No. 2, Dist. 6. All grades attended this one-room school. Elementary and high school students were eventually provided with separate facilities, and Big Cypress School House was renamed Lamkin Elementary. Cy-Fair High School was officially established on the same site in 1935. Three students comprised the graduating class. Jersey Village was already open when I started at Cy-fair in '76, so JV opened a few years before that I believe. Cy-Creek opened while I was at Cy-Fair(I had the option of going to Cy-Creek, but I stayed at Cy-Fair) You can find more about the history of Cy-Fair ISD atCy-Fair history Here is a picture of Cy-Fair in 1935 P.S. Hey Smokey, I enjoyed the maps
What's with all the Cy Creek hatred in this thread?!?! The (original) Creek will rise again... Sam Adams, Dan Neil, BJ Symons, the list goes on and on.... I grew up on Jaquet right by the little park (it's on 610 between Bissonett and Fornace). Bellaire used to be a great place to live in the 70's, especially if you were a kid. I lived next door to the Mayor.
Rip Van Rocket, For the record, I only said they had 2 renovations in the 80s and another a few years ago.
I just pulled my "Moon Landing" copy of the Houston Post out and started thumbing through it. Anybody ever hear of Texas International airlines? Holy cow. This was a year before I was born. Ads for Sears, Walgreens, Globe, etc. Pretty sweet looking through some of the want ads. Man, I wish somebody would hurry up and invent time-travel.
KF calls their drill team the "Gold Dusters", @ Klein we nicknamed them the "D**k Dusters". Klein Forest opened in 1979, and they have a section of their building that is 3 stories. Klein also has a building called the "High Rise" which is 3 stories as well.
We used to shop at the Sears store on North Shepard all the time. Sears was one of the few stores (if not the only one) in our area at that time that sold TV's, Lawnmowers, Furniture, clothes and anything else you could think of.
Wow. Didn't see TG&Y, but on page 14 of section 1 : http://www.dunkshouse.com/moonlanding/dscn0863.jpg A couple more pics : http://www.dunkshouse.com/moonlanding/dscn0862.jpg http://www.dunkshouse.com/moonlanding/dscn0866.jpg My parents used to shop at the Woolco over on S. Main and Hillcroft (?). I remember my parents calling me one day from that store saying it was being held up. I was like "then what the hell are you doing on the phone talking to me?!?!?!" I also remember that Globe store in one of the pics above. I think it used to be over on 610 across from Meyerland/Meyer Park. I don't know what's over there now. I vaguely remember TG&Y... but I don't recall going there much. I saw Foley's goes back at least that far - I didn't know that. Other stores : Joske's, KMart, Olshan, Sakowitz, Rice Food Markets, etc.
There was a TG&Y back in the 70s at the corner of 1960/Jones. When I was a kid, my mom would take my brother and I to Woolworth (there was one at Hempstead Highway and 1960 that was turned into a Builder's Square, and now, a storage place) every Saturday to buy the newest GI Joes. My mom usually got all our household stuff at TG&Y. From what I remember, it was kind of like a small KMart.
Rice Food Mkt was part of the first strip mall that was built in our area. Man, that was a long long time ago. I remember all those stores listed above. Are there any addresses in that ad for the Globe store? I seem to remember one in our area, possibly on 43rd street.
You guys remember the Stop-N-Go's that seemed to be everywhere in Houston? I spent quite a bit a money at those stores over the years. Buying baseball cards (football and basketball as well), comic books, candy, soda and even records (45's and albums)
We didn't have a Stop N Go in our neighborhood. But we did have a 7-Eleven. Mmmmmmmm........Big Gulps .........mmmmmmmmmm......... Slurpees............... We had a U-Totem in the neighborhood next to us. *giggling thinking of the name "U-Totem"*
