originally thought that said countRy, but either way it is the county in which the abortion is performed, not where the patient resides, i am not familiar with a significant amount of small towns, but the ones i have spent time in don't offer abortions. So it is not unreasonable to think that the patient would go to another county, and if they did have the abortion in the county, it still does not help realistically identify someone unless you already knew they were getting an abortion, in which case the database would serve only as a device for confirming something that you already knew. i'm playing a bit of the devil's advocate, as ridiculous as this law is, i don't think it puts anyone at risk
That isn't the point. This is personal medical information that nobody should have access to but the patient and their doctor. This is state sanctioned harrassment and shouldn't be allowed, period.
Maybe, maybe no. But what exactly is the POINT of this law, if it isn't to shame women who get abortions?
Ima's right. Shame the woman. Scare the doctor. With the wacko's out there, who already target doctors who perform abortions, having a public scorecard of how many are performed could certainly dissuade some from preforming a SC endorsed and perfectly legal procedure. Especially in smaller counties.
I have a much simpler and fair solution that could either increase abortions or decrease abortions and leave the choice to the mother: Let pro-choice advocates prepare a detailed video of a birth at 38 weeks and a separate detailed video of an abortion at 38 weeks. Require that both videos be viewed, without counseling or comment prior to scheduling an abortion. then keep it a choice for the mother
I'm cool with this as long as you also make everybody who orders a steak watch a video of the cow being butchered before eating it, and everybody who gets surgery watch a video of the procedure before they get the surgery.
steak and babies... cool there is quite a controversy over cow butchering The next election will be decided over gall bladder surgery 'choice' I'm good with both of your suggestions, in fact I'm good with just offering the option I suggested to mothers who are seeking an abortion. child birth videos are routinely shown in classrooms
Not a bad idea except for the part about letting pro-choice advocates prepare the videos. How about an independent team of medical professionals prepare the videos?
pro-choice is fine with me, shouldn't be anything to fear for anyone on either side abortion is taught as being a normal healthy procedure so a video of the procedure even late term shouldn't upset the cart... I've seen several videos of abortions at different months...it didn't change my view I think it should be an option offered to mothers, they can decline or accept- you know 'choice'
How is this a good thing? You want people making decisions on whether to have a baby based on visual emotional appeals, and you specifically argue against the education side of it?
I can introduce you to some people from PETA. They feel quite as strongly about their subject as you do about yours. I hate to break it to you, but it probably isn't going to be decided by abortion, either. The people who feel most strongly about it on both sides are minorities, and their party preference is pretty well established.
