You're right, he makes 6 million this year, just not next year or the year after that. I was just wanting to throw out that our bust of a center is actually going to be making more money each year. [IMG]

This is a very rough estimate. For example, since we're assuming by Jeff's and others posts that Matt Bullard would sign for the veteran minimum, the Rockets could actually free up more space by merely renouncing him and then resigning him.

This chart seems to suggest so far that whichever the team's direction: ( Webber or Mo Taylor ) and perhaps a Dream to boot, there will be nearly 14 million dollars with which to execute deals... w/o having to lose Langhi, Moochie or Ice Bullard.

The cap space seems to be in direct question with Mo Taylor, Shandon Anderson and Dream... so I have left them out of the equation. Obviously this chart could have been drawn up a 1000 different ways, but it should be seen as a starting point... regardless of whether or not Mo Taylor( [IMG] ) or Chris Webber( [IMG] ) are signed. :p

Note that the Rockets do have a ton of options w/o having to conjure up a Kelvin Cato suitor. Obviously we'd love to ponder a Cato and change for A. Davis trade, but note that he could be acquired w/ Mo Taylor. One could also sign Mo Taylor @ 6M (yeah right) and Dream @ 8-10 million. After Walt's and Dream's contracts came up next year, I assume the Rockets would be $10-12 million (considering an escalation of salary for Moochie) under the cap yet again.

Tres interessant! Vive les Rockets!

Your assumption is by signing SA with Early Bird he doesn't count against the cap. Wouldn't he still count something like what ever the average SF salary is? I don't think anyone ever counts $0 towards the cap. I could be wrong.

You're right OT. I actually took that portion out b/c I realized that he would still count unrenounced.

I say screw him! LOL

The #37 pick does not count for any salary space, as it is a second round pick, as long as 11 salary slots are filled (i.e. signed players, unrenounced players, first round draft picks). I would also like to know the cap hit for the number 7 pick. My guess is it is around 2.5 million.

Can anyone confirm from the CBA that early bird free agents count 130 percent of the prior year's salary (meaning Shannon's cap hit would be 2.86 million if we were going to save this amount so that we could early bird max him after Taylor and Hakeem are signed). I thought players making less than the league average counted 200% against the cap until renounced.

If we renounce Bullard, keep Langhi, save early bird space for Moochie and Shandon, my guess is that we would have roughly $13 million left for Taylor and Dream. We would probably have to give $7 million to Taylor (Detroit will drive up the price), and $6 million to Dream. At $6 million, Dream would at least be making the same as Cato. We could sign Bullard for the $1 million minimum after our cap space is used.

Next year, we could free up Dream's $6 million, and Walt's $4.75 million. The cap will go up, but so will everybody's salary, including Francis' and Thomas' by 150%. So who knows how much cap space we will have next year to sign a center. $8 million maybe?

HEB-Morris' cap hit is nothing until signed. So it'd make sense for Rockets to deal with signing him later. We'll also resign Bull to the vets minimum after other moves, so he's a $0 as well.

Shandon is early bird, which is 130%, and will count for 2.86 mill unrenounced.

Griffin counts 80% of the scale, or 1.34072

Achebe, I posted my numbers in heyparty's thread-Here. June 28, 5:23. Do we agree?

I did a search for the pick salaries. Here is what I got.

Pick #7
1st Year: $1,675,900
2nd Year: $1,801,600
3rd Year: $1,927,300
4th Year (team option): increas of 27.00%

here is the link
http://www.midsouth-hoops.com/Memphis_-_NBA/body_memphis_-_nba.html

I know its a random source but I saw another one before the draft on the sporting news that had at least about the same breakdown.

Right now, Bullard's salary is counting 200% against the cap. I think he made around $1 million this past year. I'm fairly certain that the Rockets--if they are intent on keeping him--would GAIN cap space once they sign Bullard to the $1 million veteran minimum.

Real GM confirms that the number 7 pick costs $1,675,900 against the cap. So if we pick up the Langhi option, set aside $680,000 in early bird space for Moochie, $2,860,000 for Shandon, we would be left with roughly $13 million for Taylor/Dream.

There will be two groups in which the Rockets deal with free agents.

First, they'll figure out what they want to do with Hakeem, Mo, Shandon and any outside free agents. All of our other free agents not named Moochie will be renounced (with possible exception of Colson, if they determine he won't affect their ability to sign others). If they determine they want to resign them, they will not renounce that trio, so they can maintain LBR.

Second, they'll resign Bullard and Moochie, and then sign Griffin and Morris.

Here's why:
Griffin will only count 80% of the scale until he is signed, as long as he doesn't pull an Antonio Daniels, and say that he is going to sign for the max rookie contract. Once we finish other business, we can exceed the cap to resign Griffin. We save about 700K for free agents like Hakeem and Mo, which could be important.

Bullard will count for nothing once renounced, and obviously wants to remain here. Once we finish other business, Bullard can sign for the 1 mill vet. minimum, and have no effect on our ability to sign others.

Moochie has early bird rights. Unrenounced, he counts ~680K. If we choose to sign him to a max early bird deal now, he'd count about 4.5 mill against the cap. Pretty big difference.

Morris is a 2nd round pick, and has no guaranteed contract. We can exceed the cap to sign him, but if we signed him before signing other free agents, he'd count against the cap.

Doing it with your methodology:

6 player contracts + Maloney + Langhi + Griffin @ 80% + Moochie unrenounced 680k: $26,143,707

That leaves $16,556,293 for Dream, Mo T, SA or other FA's.

As I understand you, even if that entire amount is used up, the Rockets can then go over the cap to give Moochie a pay increase (beyond the $680k), Rookie max Griffin to 120%, vet min Bull and negotiate Morris (who probably wants to sign here anyway) and probably Colson, too.

Handling Dreams' contract looks like the top priority as all other business decisions trickle down from there. If the Rockets can get him for between $6m-7m, everything else seems very possible/plausible.

16.5 millions:6 for dream,6 for Mo t,4.5 for shandon,4.5 for moochie(max early bird),1 for airbull(vet's min),sign griffin/morris to their respective contracts.

dream/cato/collier
mo/kt
griffin/trock/langhi
cat/shandon/walt
wink/moochie

we have to pray this team works because dream coming off the cap next year wont do much with the contracts we give out this year.

With Maloney and excluding Langhi option & Griffin 1st year salary: $23,657,137

With Langhi option of $465,850: $24,122,987
Plus Griffin @ 120% of base: $26,134,067

Available on $42.7M cap: $16,565,933

Signing Dream and Mo T to any combination totaling $13M leaves $3.5M to sign Shandon, Moochie, Morris, Bullard, and/or Colson.

For simplicity, I have avoided the impact of "Bird" rights but I believe the following are correct:

1) The Rockets can go over the cap to resign Moochie.

2) The Rockets are "technically" over the cap until Dream is renounced or resigned.

Rocket Guard,
doesn't that put us over? Bull's $1 mil puts us at $17.5 mil, plus Moochie. Not that it really matters since the salary amounts are all hypothetical. Personally, I see Mo T. signing closer to 7 million than 6, but whatever. Here's a (silly) question: It's always the first year of the contract that counts against the cap, right? We talk about a player signing for about 7 million a year over a six-year contract. But wouldn't the first year be significantly less than that? So if we were to sign Mo to a contract like the above, might he only count around 6 million against the cap the first year?

Achebe wondered out loud in another thread if we could sign CWebb at the max, and Hakeem at 4.5.

Thomas- 0.946920
Francis- 3.47352
Mobley- 4.41288
Langhi- 0.46585
Cato- 6.0
Maloney- 2.54375
Moochie- 0.68055
Collier- 1.280067
Walt- 5.0
Morris- 0.0 (non guaranteed)
Griffin-1.34072 (80% of scale, will most likely go to 120% when signed)
-----------------
26.144257 million in salaries

If the cap is 42 mill, add 12.6 for Webber's max, and we have 3.255 mill left. Not enough.

If the cap is 42.7 mill add 12.81 mill for Webber's max, and 3.745743 mill is left. In this scenario, if you can convince the Kings to take Kenny Thomas in a sign and trade, you would have enough to get Hakeem his 4.5 mill.

Or if we could purge Walt for nothing, all fits very nicely.

Relativist-Bullard can be resigned for the veteran's minimum of 1 million if we're over the cap.
