Okay, I finally broke down and got a PS3. Need recommendations.

Yes. Though March is getting a bit loaded for Sony, so I could see them shuffling things around. Probably more likely to move GT5 or something else with an unclear release date though, not GoW 3.

Anyway, most of the games I'd recommend have already been mentioned (Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Resistance 1, MGS4, LBP, etc.). You don't need to play Uncharted 1 to enjoy the sequel, but it is a pretty good game, so wouldn't hurt to play it. If you want to play R1 and R2, you probably need to play R1 first...although then you'll play R2 and probably wonder why Insomniac changed some of the great aspects of R1 (not that R2 is bad, especially outside of the SP...but it was a bit of a disappointment to me). Disgaea 3 is another good RPG, although if you aren't already a fan, don't know if you'd be interested. If you like baseball (or even if you don't), check out the MLB The Show games. PixelJunk games on PSN are pretty fun (particularly Monsters and Eden IMO).

Two games that I enjoyed were Heavenly Sword and Folklore, although it might be of a bit love/hate it kind of thing. If you can rent those, you might want to do that (especially for HS since it is really short).

Thanks, RC. I knew you'd have plenty of suggestions. Someone told me Heavenly Sword was "A poor man's God of War." Would you agree?

Hmm...in some aspects I suppose. In terms of the fighting engine, it is certainly closer to God of War than other, more hardcore games (NG, DMC, etc.). It is relatively easy to jump right end and start pulling off nice moves. However, there is some strategy required due to the stances used in the game (some enemies can only be defeated using one stance, and you may be fighting 2-3 types of enemies at once). I actually liked the mechanic, although I think it was definitely a first attempt and not something as polished as other games (a HS2 would have been nice to check out :(). That, and lots of QTEs, like GoW. Nariko can be quite brutal in combat, although still no comparison to Kratos.

The game is quite different in other ways. There are some um...mini-games? that involve the use of catapults or crossbows to attack enemies from afar. There are also parts of the game where you'll fight hundreds (or thousands) of enemies, sort of like Dynasty Warriors I guess. This would show how flexible the game engine is, although the game's framerate takes a huge hit during these scenes, so I'm not sure how impressive that is. Can't recall very many (if any) puzzles, and certainly none on par with some of the good ones in GoW. There is no jump button either, so platforming is out as well. Boss fights aren't near as epic as God of War, but then again, few are.

I'll think I'll admit that the gameplay was actually a bit above average to good at best. Some nice ideas, but probably needed some more polish and/or depth. A solid first effort, but hard to compare favorably to other action games.

Now, the game does have fantastic visuals (even if you ignore the fact that it was released in 2007), great cinematics and voice acting (albeit a bit over the top), a powerful soundtrack, etc. Not a surprise since they pushed this as a cinematic experience, and in these areas, they definitely delivered something special I think. That's primarily why I would recommend checking it out.

Nice little mini-review there. I'll rent this one from Gamefly.

If you're an RPG guy, I can't recommend Oblivion highly enough. (There was a loooong thread about it here, a while back.)

I bought it last July and it gobbled up a month of my life. One of the most absorbing, immersive gaming experiences ever.

And everyone says that Dragon's Age is just as good. Bought it but haven't yet played it -- know it will suck away 2-3 weeks and I can't let that happen just yet.

I actually agree with you. But people have different opinions I guess. Since all the reviewers like it, it must be favored by a good amount of players too. OP may like it who knows.
