It seems that the perfect coach that meet your standard is Larry Smith. A perfect coach not just for any team but for this specific rockets team is one that can teach. When you have many players that never finished college, you want to find a mentor for them. When you have a bunch of potentials to develope, you'd better have some teachers as head coach and assistant coaches.
I think I know who would be perfect as the headcoach next year... YAO MING. The rox should make Yao the player/coach... he would be perfect, he understands the importance of the low post game... and he gets along well with the player. Yao is also someone who commands a lot of respect around the league.. furthermore, he speaks chinese! His parents can be his assiants. Yao mama is an expert of the zone defense.. I don't know much about yao father... but he is also a former national player.. so he probably know something about basketball... he can edit game tapes in the summer to get himself started, so it should be fine. I will let the rest of you find out the rest of the positives of Yao being the headcoach.. my only question is that is it allowed in the NBA to have a player as coach any more??
The more I think about this the more I like Dunleavy. He's been putting up with the Blazers crew of head cases for years so he can handle steve and cat pretty easily. I'm confident he'd have no problem sitting people when they neeeded it, though this was easier with the awesome depth the Blazers have had for the last few years. Give him Silas or Nelson as an assistant (both?) and we've got a crew that can teach and control a team at the same time. As for him being worried about Jr's career, if he takes a job as a head coach anywhere then I don't think thats an issue.
I love Paul Silas but he is too much of a player's coach. He needs a veteran team just like HOuston needs a teacher &/or disciplinarian. Brown or Dunleavy sound perfect.
I agree. He is considered by many to be the best developer of talent in the NBA and one of the league's best with X's and O's. He is not a taskmaster but he is a strong personality. He also has a tradition of winning and he and Rudy and CD are good friends. Out of all the choices, Brown is the one guy that is a definite step up. With all due respect to Van Gundy or Dunleavy, they do not represent a significant step forward in the coaching ranks. They certainly aren't chumps, but they are not upgrades in the category of Larry Brown. By all accounts, Brown is one of the best 3 or 4 coaches in the NBA. If you have a shot at him, you take it with both barrels.
