I don't really care about Smith. Don't even know how he got into the discussion. I've watched Kolb take every single home snap in person for 3+ years now.. so I've got a good idea of what he's capable of. I can see him having a capable, productive NFL career.. I'm not counting on him being highly rated going into the draft, I expect him to be highly underrated, in fact.
please, no one is claiming Kolb is the frontrunner. that doesn't mean he hasn't been good enough to be in the discussion. albeit, being in CUSA doesn't really help his case. if i had a vote, it probably wouldn't go to Kolb. I still think he's a great college QB.
yeah, I know you didn't say anything about Troy Smith personally. some other UH guy named JeopardE brought him up claiming that Kolb was way better than Smith (at least I assume he's a UH fan, he referred to them as 'our defense'). then a few other UHers started piling on against him too...I just found that hilarious and to be total homerism I have nothing against Kolb, I said earlier in the thread that he's fine and solid. just that people shouldn't claim he's better than Troy Smith, *especially* when considering schedules and big-game experience. which I believe to be a definite factor. although there are rare exceptions, like Steve McNair
This reminds me of when A&M claimed Reggie McNeal was a better QB than Vince Young and VY would be a 4th round draft pick at WR. Kolb is doing a great job of what he needs to do. He hasn't really played a great defense yet, though. He won't win the Heisman and shouldn't be in the discussion right now. He's torn up such powerhouses as Rice, Tulane, Grambling and the fake OSU. I'm not a big Troy Smith fan but the guy has a cannon and has extremely high football IQ. Kolb may be this year's Jay Cutler, though, if he keeps it up. It's hard to win a heisman, though, especially if you're from a mid-major conference. VY put up 500 yards on the 'vaunted' Oklahoma St. defense last year and it didn't do him any good. With Miami having a down year, UH has a slight chance this week. If they win this week, you guys have a chance to go undefeated as the only semi-challenge you'll have left is UTEP. Who knows, perhaps Kolb will make a David Carr-like rise.
Ive heard in the media and maybe from alumni that Miami was once very much like UofH back in the 60's or 70's (something like that). In comparison they were both "commuter" schools in big cities and not really known for their sports programs. Now Miami enjoys huge crowds, a national fan base and recruits heavily the top prospects in the nation. In a sense I would LOVE to see UofH follow this blueprint. I think it energizes the city and brings more National prominence and respect for this city. The same goes for Rice. I graduated from Texas Tech, but am anxious to go to a Coogs game this year. I really like the changed attitude and the direction the school is taking with all of its sports teams (basketball and baseball programs look to be going in the right direction). It only enhances the city we live in. Im all for rushing the field... Get the students pumped.... Thats what its all about!! We used to do this at Tech (when I attended) in the mid to late 90's when our football program was coming around (Zach Thomas was a beast), and its an exciting way for the students to show their love and support for the game. Just dont let a few dumbass students ruin the fun by grabbing the goalposts and ramming it into the Aggie section of the stadium..... Thats totally uncalled for. As a result, arrests are now made for anyone who tries to storm the field..... Really a shame that a few bad apples spoiled the bunch.
Miami almost cut their football program back in the day. It wasn't untill Schnellenberger arrived in 1979 that they started getting the reputaion they do now. But your assesment is dead on. UofH can, IMHO, become the second best football team in Texas. Running the table this year would most certainly get them a BCS invite. A win over their opponent and they most likey would get an invite into the Big 12/SEC/Big East. Recruits would take notice, especially local talent. I know my fellow longorns might not like this, Aggie's cetainly will not, but Houston has more to offer an 18yrd old black male than any other city in the Big 12. ....of course this is all predicated on beating Miami. U of H would need one of those miracle seasons that come along only once ever so often.
OK. Now I see why the fans of UH rushed the field, they are completely delusional. One undefeated (lol) season, and they will get an invite to the Big XII or SEC....LOL!!!
Donny, I just wanna say that I'm really giving you guys a hard time about rushing the field, I don't think it's a bad thing -- I hope one day I get a chance to do the same thing in a victory (although it is banned in our conference). I'm glad that UH is doing well in football and I'd like to root for them. Hopefully they are on TV more now that they are winning again. But it is delusional to think that UH is going to go undefeated this year and win a BCS game. Even if they did, the Big XII and SEC aren't going to come knocking on their door...
Undefeated is hard in any conference.. of course we'd be mediocre in any BCS conference.. but guess what, that is what sucks about the BCS.. it divides up the competition even more.. whereas schools like UH, which were national title threats once, are now relegated to fighting over a chance to have a shot to even think about playing in a new years day bowl.. As far as conference changes.. sometime around 2010-11 a conference shakeup will happen. UH plans to have expanded its stadium to 40-45K by then and also have upgraded facilties in basketball as well. The idea is to be in key position to leapfrog into a major conference. I think it can happen.
