I saw Matt Bullard coming out of one of those haunted houses around Halloween a few years back. You haven't lived until you've seen a 6'10" Count Dracula.

Man, I bet the club was really SMOKEY that night. ;)

And speaking of gettin HIGH, I dope it up with John Lucas all the time.

On a serious note, If anyone ever wants to catch a glimpse of Olajuwon, I know for a fact that he always shops at High Fashion Fabric store on Fannin in Midtown. He normally buys tons of cloth there to make his religious Muslim outfits. I normally shop there to get cloth to make fly suits and shirts. I have personaly met him SEVERAL TIMES there. In fact, on the center column of the building by the cash registers, you will see a photo of Hakeem (or Akeem or whatever he is calling himself today) standing with the owners of the store and a sign below that reads, "Hakeem shops here all the time, you should too!" or something to that effect.

I met Barkley at Bar Houston a couple of years ago. Very friendly guy and down to earth even in person and with a million people trying to talk to him. Can drink with the best of them.

Ralph Sampson was with him. I asked Ralph why Virginia had lost so early in the tournament that year and that I had predicted them to go to the Sweet 16. He said, "Naw man, they suck". I thought that was pretty funny.

Saw Kelvin Cato about a month ago at Bennigan's with some girl and a kid. Man is he huge and surly looking. He even eats with a scowl on his face.
A buddy of mine saw him out dancing the night away when he was supposed to be injured.

Saw Akeem Olajuwon drive up into Sharpstown mall the year he was drafted by the Rockets. He was driving a Toyota Supra with a personalized vanity plate (believe it read "AKEEM"). Saw him again in the early 90s while working as a bellhop at the Lakeway Resort in Austin. I also met Mookie Blaylock, Dan Rather (a real jerk), Tom Landry, and Troy Aiken (with his 2 6' tall blonde babes, Chevy Silverado Z71 with matching wetbikes) at the resort.
Ya'll remember Chris Jent? He played with the Rockets for 2 years I believe around 1992 timeframe. His brother was my next door neighbor in the Marines in 29 Palms. When I was in high school living in Austin, Reid Gettys' younger brother lived in my neighborhood (at least he claimed to be). I remember he exercised for 36 straight hours, became dehydrated, and was sent to the hospital for heat injuries. Really weird.

Unless you count Compaq Center, I've met a ton of players at the Rocky Mountain Revue. But then, that's more developmental players, coaches, etc. But the list includes Bryce Drew, Dan Langhi, Kenny Thomas, Jason Collier, Jim Boylan, Larry Smith, CD, Rudy T, and Eddie Griffin.

Plus a lot of other dudes that never made the team.

My son ran into Cato during the time the Rockets were looking for coaches. He got a smile out of Cato. My son was trying to talk Rockets with Cato, and Kelvin was largely uninterested until my son said "my dad says you're one of the top rebounders in the league. He says you need Mo Taylor's minutes."

My son said Cato smiled real big and said "does your dad want to be our new coach?"

From everything I've heard about Cato, he's usually fairly disinterested in fans, so if you see him, give him specific big ups, like you know his game and appreciate it. If I ever meet Cato, the first thing I'm saying is "you do a great job guarding Shaq."

I'm really impressed with how Cato has become a smart big man defender, a tough guy who fights for position, and does so with bigger men.

    1. "Akeem" Olajuwon in Northgate Forest.

When I worked at Victors' before I obtained my teaching position at Dulles:

    2. Mario Elie
    3. Carl Herrera
    4. Robert Horry
    5. Sam Mack (always trying to get free stuff)
    6. Mike Hampton
    7. Mike Munchak
    8. Bruce Matthews
    9. Moses Malone (denied every time he was Mo)

Charles Barkley, at the Sports Resort (I think it's near Kirkwood off 59, just before you get to the Loop), at the Q Cafe, and at a Taco Bell.

BTW, for those ex-students of Dulles, you have to understand that there are two ways to look at education. Granted, there are always going to be teachers who are "paycheck" teachers and don't expend the extra effort for their students. However, there are also a handful of students who come to teachers with an entitlement mentality, as if they do not have to put forth the effort to learn or succeed.

I taught English in Dulles H.S. from 1997 to 1999 (my students called me Mr. D), and I can tell you that, in all honesty, many of those teachers cared and busted their butts to help their students. It's a two-way street- teachers have to provide thought-provoking lessons and assessments to assist individuals, but all the teaching in the world "ain't gonna" help those who expect an educational handout, rather than an assist.

Back to the Rockets, funniest story/meeting was Vernon Maxwell. This was after the 1993 season, Vernon had surgery or something and had his arm in a cast. And I go with some friends to a place called the Yucatan Liquor Stand (I think it was on Richmond). Well, Vernon is playing pool with one arm along with his friend, and he's actually playing very well. Stupid me- I go over to him, congratulate him and the Rox for making the playoffs and almost beating the hated Sonics in the 2nd round, then I challenge him to a game of pool. Damn if he doesn't beat me while I have 5 balls left on the table, with one arm, with my friends laughing their a##es off at me. And I'm not that bad at pool- guy just sharked me out of $10.

    Real nice guy, though.

    The end.

used to see calvin murphy at the bowling alley near my house in alief- moons ago- when he still played. convinced earl campbell to go out and say hey to my mom, who was waiting in the car while i bought kolaches- also in alief. scared her half to death. saw rudy at that burger joint cross the street from little woodrows on kirby. got arrested for dwi by same cop as rudy in west u. i was also not convicted. that cop is a real jerk who will take anyone downtown that he can.

    speaking of beyonce....

she attended one of my father's parties at his store last year. my dad had no idea who she was, but some of the other guests told him she was a real popular musician. of course he couldn't remember her name, so he told me some popluar musician was at his party - "a real pretty black girl with curly blonde hair." i asked if Jay-Z was there, and he had no idea who i was talking about.

    oh well.

as for the school. it was a good school. some of the ap teachers were very good. it was competitive for those who wanted to excel. top 15% was as competitive as any in the district.
