Oil was trading below $50/barrel this afternoon for a period of time. It's now just about $50, down about $1.85 from yesterday. Inventories were tons higher than they expected...of both crude and gasoline. This was the original thread regarding this...which was started back in April of last year. Amazing how quickly it changed. Steve Forbes said then it was headed to $40/barrel. He's the only one I KNOW who was saying that back then. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=111960&page=1&pp=20
this is really shocking given the weather situation. I thought the analysts would boost the prices due to the cold weather. I guess not all parts of the country use heating oil though. but I would suspect that most of the midwest that has been affected does.
i wondered about that, too. but i heard a couple of analysts say it was just too little, too late. that one coldsnap wouldn't affect the price of oil.
Some parts of the country like here in New England, the winter has been vary mild so far. Plus the oil price had all kinds of what if this happens BS built into it. Now if the only the gas price will go down to below 2.
I'm not sure but I think New England and the region around it uses the most heating oil in the U.S. but that may be because it gets the coldest up there and due to the population since you have some major metros like NYC, Boston, Philly, etc. up there. I'm sure Midwesterners use it too but maybe not to the extent the northeast does.
I think we need to give the Big Oil companies some subsidies. If we are gonna tax them for "windfall profits" then let's give something back when oil gets cheaper.
funny you should make this sarcastic remark. oil companies do get subsidies already, congress is currently debating whether to revoke them. they get subsidies to explore other fuel options. but I know, the government is always punishing businesses.
I was just making fun of the "windfall profits" tax idea. The idea that companies are manipulating the price to make extra profits is just wrong. If they are being evil when prices go up then does that mean are they being philanthropic when prices go down? No, they are just doing business. I don't think companies should be receiving subsidies or sympathy, nor should they be attacked when they make lots of money.
but they do receive subsidies now. so your joke wasn't funny, because its very real. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6854127&ft=1&f=1001. I know the point you were trying to make. its just not sarcasm when it real.
I know they receive subsidies. Lots of industries do. My point is we shouldn't change our policies based on a run-up or run-down of commodity prices.
This is an absolutely idiotic move. 1) Why punish the people and firms working the hardest to remedy the demand/supply imbalance in the oil market? 2) Why make it harder for American resources to compete in a global market? 3) Why increase costs at the pump for consumers? 4) The impact of the tax increase will result in oil companies bidding less to acquire leases on federal lands/waters. This will offset any benefit from increased tax revenues. A stupid move made by demagogues who are incapable of understanding the intricacies of the energy market. I would expect nothing less from liberals.
its the fault of the republicans. keep people poor and they'll rise up against the man. thats why they invented poor laws remember. welfare state prevents this. walk it off.
nah. it was wishful thinking that turned out right. people just forget that it's ok to be optimistic sometimes!
