I meant that it looked like it expired to me but apparently not to the refs since a flag was not tossed. (That's what I meant by "extremely close")

It read :00, but when the ball was snapped, but the refs never did anything about it.

Miami can whine all they want, calls went both ways. I got an e-mail this morning from some buckeye bretheren with pictures of 5 holds against OSU which weren't called.

Dude made the right call. Watch the play from the start, he held him off the line of scrimmage (which is what was called) and he played the receiver not the ball in the end zone. Granted the flag came in late, but is was a legitimate flag.

OSU won that game. He11 Miami didn't even want to win the game. If they did they woudl have put Gore in the game when Maghee got hurt. Instead they put in Walter's son and he got squashed.

So whine on Miami fans, but if you wanted to really win play your best players, don't worry about wasteing a year of eligibility.

    Go BUCKS!

What amazed me about the refs was not only did they make that call against Miami, they also stopped Miami four times from the two yard line.

    Simply amazing.

Yea, that makes a lot of sense to play someone who has only played on the Scout team all year in the NC game just because McGahee got hurt. I doubt very seriously that Frank would have done anything because playing was the last thing that he or anyone else expected. Besides, Jason Geathers should have been in over Payton, but I'm not Coker nor Chudzinski.

Legitimate flag?? LOL...did you not read Porter's weakass excuse about how he had to replay the play in his mind?? Did you not know how the Big 12 had to send out not one but two written letter of apologies because of blown calls by this jackass official?? Which of course, begs the question...why in the HELL was he out there in the first place??

    Chuckie,

I mean I could point out other things besides that call like the playclock expiring SEVERAL times on Krenzel, Allen's complete classless throat slashing gesture after the hit he placed on McGahee that went uncalled (should have been a 15 yard penalty), and hell, I still am not completely sold that Clarett stripped Sean Taylor of the ball. After all, they both had their hands on it when they were on the ground which normally in a situation like that, the offense retains possession except in this one isolated case (the referee making the call, I don't think, really had a good view of it).

But the thing is this - whether you or any other Buckeye fan is going to like this, there are always going to be people in the media that feel that your title is a tainted one. Don't believe me? Just ask the guy from Richmond who was an unbiased observer of this game (posted his article up above). No one is going to sit there and say "There is no QUESTION that Ohio State is the best team in the land" like they did when Miami won the Rose Bowl in 2002. And the reason is because of Terry Porter.

And as a college football fan, I think you AND me can agree that is not right, i.e. an official's call has placed doubt in the minds of people about a team.

    Oh and RM95,

I know that you will NEVER listen to me about this, but at least admit there were some other horrendous things against Miami like the throat slashing, the expired play clock, the questionable fumble ruling against Taylor, etc. Thanks!

I never claimed there wasn't. My entire point is that the refs didn't cause the turnovers or stopped Miami from scoring touchdowns.

Care to share a link for the Big XII issuing an apology?

Actually, Kevin Weiberg, the Big XII commissioner, replied that they did NOT send out 2 "screw up notes" on behalf of that ref. That was made up by someone in the media...just an FYI.

I still am not completely sold that Clarett stripped Sean Taylor of the ball. After all, they both had their hands on it when they were on the ground which normally in a situation like that, the offense retains possession except in this one isolated case (the referee making the call, I don't think, really had a good view of it).

If only they had a jump-ball of sorts.....heck, maybe if they did the old XFL kickoff!;)

I originally found that info on ESPN, but I can't find the article.

However, I did a google search on "Terry Porter Bad Calls":p and found this nugget:

I'll reproduce some of the article (since it is long):

"Still, the penalty was the hot button for Miami fans in the loss' aftermath. It would all slide down a little easier if field judge Terry Porter talked a better game than he called, and if he wasn't involved in controversy before.

Twice over the past two seasons, according to ESPN, the Big 12 Conference has issued letters of apology for games involving controversial calls made by Porter. This demands the question: Why was he involved in this big-stakes game?

Porter said he waited so long to make the call because, 'I replayed it in my mind. I wanted to make sure it was the right call.'

Whatever. It didn't look like much interference on any replay but in Porter's mind."

    Ask and ye shall receive.:)

I'm still waiting to here how the refs stopped Miami from the 2 yard line 4 times in a row.

Or how they threw those interceptions.

Not to sound rude or anything, but you don't get it, do you?

If that call is not made, the one by Porter, then there is no 4 cracks from the 2 yard line

Can you honestly not see that, Blake??!! I mean, damn, come on that call had an absolute impact on the game in that if it is not called (like it was for 4 seconds) then the game is OVER. Period.

And look, Ohio State played well and played well enough to deserve to win, but there exists that thought in many people's minds that it took a referee's call to win the game for them.

Now, let's actually talk about the call: Sharpe and Gamble were pretty much jockying for position like many WRs and CBs do. Is that what Porter thought was the penalty? Why did he call it pass interference instead of holding? Was it a blatantly obvious foul? No, it wasn't. Why else would Dan Fouts be criticizing it or better yet, Mike Doss, the OSU safety say that it was a make-up call for the missed one on Gamble (despite the fact that the playclock expired on Krenzel)?

I know what you are doing...you are playing devil's advocate and trying to reason to me that a call doesn't win or lose a game. However, when it has an absolute bearing or impact on the game, then you can't say that. That would be like someone hitting a home run in a World Series in Game 7, in the bottom of the 9th inning with his team down by a run and the umpire saying that the home run doesn't count but is actually an out. That means the team in the field wins the game and the Series.

I mean if the situation was reversed and Miami won over OSU in double OT thanks to a highly dubious call, then I would be pissed. I mean I look at their other National Titles (5 in less than 20 years) and see how they won them....none of those were tainted but the one in 2002 is. That would be bothersome to me, but I guess OSU fans don't see it like that...maybe because it is their first one in 34 years.

Yes, because you can't do that once the ball is in the air.

Why did he call it pass interference instead of holding?

Because it WAS pass interference and not holding. Why would he want to call the wrong penalty?

    Jon,

I can see that, I understand what a huge consequence that call caused (even though I'm not convinced it was a bad or good call). Miami had chances before and after to win, how can you not see that? Oh wait you're a biased Miami fan.

Is this argument still going on?

It will never be settled. This game will go down in sports lore as the perfect barroom fodder. It's what college football what the BCS executives want you to do!

Do YOU want to be a pigeon of the BCS?

Take a stand... don't talk about this game again! That'll show them! :D

    Major,

I have read many articles on many sites and they all said that it was NOT pass interference. If it was anything it was holding. Once they got into the end zone, there was nothing going on, so the holding had to HAPPEN before they got into the end zone.

Read what Porter said himself, ""I saw the guy holding the guy prior to the ball being put in the air," Porter said. Now he claims, of course, that Sharpe continued to hold Gamble while the ball was in the air but by then both were in the end zone and you would be hard-pressed to see any holding in the end zone.

Maybe you saw something that I didn't but I didn't see an obvious hold in the end zone.

And the jockeying for position was BEFORE Krenzel threw the ball. I know in the NFL there is a 5 yard bump rule, but I don't know if it is different in college.

The bottom line is that it is a weak call at best and one that did not appear to be blatantly obvious.

If it was, why did Fouts criticize it as well as the guy from the Richmond paper and why did Doss describe it as "bogus"?

I've heard sports personalities say it was a decent call too, what's your point?

    This is getting tired.

Easy, because if that call is not made, the game is OVER.

I'll take drapg's advice and will only argue with you if you can come up with a different angle.

However, I am impressed that you spelled my name right!;)

Why not? I'm sure out of 50 million people who watched the game, a few famous ones and sportswriters would criticize it - it was certainly a controversial call. That's not really evidence of anything either way.

The point is that the title of OSU's is tainted in many people's minds. The last team I can think of that won a NC that had this much of a tainted title was the '90 Colorado team that benefited from a 5th down against Missouri.

Tired?? I could go on forever about this because I will NEVER ever accept it. To paraphrase Ted "Theodore" Logan, it was bogus, dude.

    Hey Jeff, Clutch, or DoD:

Can you retire (close)this thread? That way I am not tempted to keep bringing this thing up.

    Thanks
