Police drummer rips band's "lame" concert
    Fri Jun 1, 2007 7:09AM EDT
    By Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The singer in the Police jumps like a "petulant pansy," the drummer is making a "complete hash," and who knows what the guitarist is doing?

Notes from a bitter critic? Actually, it's a disarmingly frank concert review from the aforementioned drummer of the newly reunited rock trio.

A philosophical Stewart Copeland unleashed his vitriol in a posting on his Web site on Thursday, a day after the band played its second show in Vancouver, the Canadian city where it began its first world tour in more than 20 years on Monday.

"This is unbelievably lame," Copeland wrote of Wednesday's show at the GM Place arena. "We are the mighty Police and we are totally at sea."

Most of the 20,000 fans at the venue might not have noticed a series of small flubs, but Copeland, singer/bassist Sting, and guitarist were painfully aware of them.

Copeland started the show off on the wrong foot, literally. He tripped as he took to the stage, and then banged his gong at the wrong time so that "the big pompous opening to the show is a damp squib."

He did not hear Summers' opening riff to "Message In a Bottle," and Sting in turn misheard Copeland's drum intro -- "so we are half a bar out of sync with each other. Andy is in Idaho."

They quickly recovered, but then Sting got his footwork wrong as he leapt into the air to signal the end to a shambolic version of their rat-race rant "Synchronicity II."

"The mighty Sting momentarily looks like a petulant pansy instead of the god of rock," Copeland reported.

"And so it goes, for song after song," he wrote, with tunes such as "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me" reduced to ruin.

"It usually takes about four or five shows in a tour before you get to the disaster gig. But we're The Police so we are a little ahead of schedule," he said.

Fortunately, no fists flew backstage as they did back in the Police's heyday. The threesome fell into each other's arms laughing hysterically, Copeland said.

"Screw it, it's only music. What are you gonna do? But maybe it's time to get out of Vancouver."

The band's next show is set for Saturday in Edmonton.

As long as they work out those bugs before June 29th, I'm good.

I'm a little disturbed that they are getting along so well, though. They play better when they're pissed off. :D

That makes sense, I liked Metallica a lot better when they were addicted to Jaegarmeister.

If they butcher an opening riff like that, then they should do what "Yes" does when that happens...stop the song, apologize to the audience, and start the song over. I don't want to see no song that didn't start off right and went on for a bit where they were off rhythm only to listen to them b**** and moan about it after the show. I can excuse Sting for jumping at the wrong spot in a song but I can't excuse a half ass playing of "Message in a Bottle" when that is one of the key songs everyone wants to see played and played correctly. You bastards!

    Police in Dallass:

Police were outstanding. Throw that "they're not tight" garbage out the window. DMB could only wish to be this on the ball. Every facet of the night and show gets an extremely solid A (aside from the predictably lame Dallass crowd). While not a replica of the Synch tour, they certainly weren't ruining songs by re-rendition. Phenomenal seats didn't hurt either. Sting's kid is a damn clone.

    Guys going Friday should enjoy.

I've been watching You Tube videos from every show and they seem to be getting tighter and tighter. The first few shows were NOT tight at all, so I was getting a little worried that they might not be taking it as seriously as they should.

But from what I can tell by the videos, they seem to be getting better and better every show. Last videos I saw were from LA this weekend and they were MUCH better than the first 3 shows of the tour.

I'm in the upper deck right at about midcourt (with the basketball configuration), but I see that they have 3 HUGE jumbo-tron screens above the stage, so I'm not worried about the view.

I've been looking forward to this concert (which starts in 35 hours, 33 minutes and 27 seconds....not that I'm counting or anything...) for about...oh, 25 years? I told my girlfriend to be prepared because I'm going to be screaming like a 12 year old at a Brittney Spears concert...

My last week my wife changed my daughters birthday party from Saturday night to friday night because some of the girls can't come on Saturday.

She did this without consulting me or our calendar.

Now she has informed me that I have to be there to help watch the kids in the pool.

Now I have to sell my tickets. :( :( :(

I think I'll use the $450 on crack and hookers just to show her who is boss. :D

Amazing concert. Like emjohn said, throw all that bull**** about them not being tight out the window. They're totally on their game.

    Pros:

    • They did POLICE versions of ALL the songs, not Sting versions.
    • Stewart was totally on his game. Playing like he was 25 again.
    • They played all the "hits" with some surprises (like Bed's Too Big Without You, Truth Hits Everybody, Next to You).
    • They seemed to really be having a blast playing together. Even Sting..
    • TC crowd was really into it. Everyone was singing. Sting stopped singing and listened a few times. He was impressed and said we were better than Dallass. ;)
    • The 5 jumbo trons made our nosebleed seats much more bearable. Great camera work by those guys. They didn't miss a thing.
    • It was just Sting, Stewart and Andy. No extra musicians or singers hidden under the stage.

    Cons:

    • Some of the songs (like So Lonely) were in different keys so Sting could hit the high notes. It gave them a different feel.
    • Some of Andy's extended solos were too long. I would have rather heard a few more songs instead.
    • Roxanne was too long. Again, I would have rather heard more songs instead of the 10-minute version of Roxanne.
    • TC sound blows if you're sitting up really high.
    • Some really weird sounding key changes (in the middle of songs) that kind of threw everyone who was singing (including myself) off.
    • A few questionable song choices (Walking in Your Footsteps??)

Still one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Here's how they opened it. Notice how into it the TC crowd was  :
