Geez, just call us "Knickerbockers Southwest".
(may the basketball gods help us)

I hope the team buys more towels... did anyone in NBA history sweat more than Ewing??

Ewing was good enough to create some space for that short jumper he would knock down with regularity. He knew how to get “his shot”. Yao has a wonderful soft jumper, and needs to look for his shot more. That shot should be automatic from where he posts up. He also can teach Ming to be more demanding and assertive when the game gets hot and heavy. Yao becomes a wallflower next the dominant personalities of Francis and Mobley at times. I think Ewing will bring those things to Yao’s table.

Plus, he knows VanGundy's system as well as anyone. He can come in and start teaching right away, instead of learning a new coach's system.

Didn't Ewing work with Mourning in the summers when Zo was younger?

I seem remember Zo giving him props for his help during the offseason.

Personally, I don't really care for him, but I imagine he will be a solid big man's coach. Might help with our new rookie as well.

I am hoping that THE ROOK (my new nickname for Badiane) will perform well enough in the Summer leagues to make the team, though there is not much room for him to get playtime at the 3 or 4.
I have a bad feeling about Taylor this year though, so something might open up.

That's the best reason I've read yet to have him. Nice post.
    I'm still freaked out.

Damn, first so many of you were glad to get rid of Rudy. Then, you were extatic to bring in Van Gundy. Now, you guys are already crying at his first hire, one that isn't as important as you guys think. The only reason this move bothers you is because Ewing is so hated around here. Regardless of what he did to us as an Hoya, Ewing is an NBA Hall of Famer and a top 50 player for a reason. Chill out.

Ewing should be a good addition to the Rox.

Ewing was the right choice over Elie because he has at least a year of coaching experience and Elie is a rookie. Also, it makes more sense to have a big man here to teach Yao.

As for Dream, he has no interest in coaching so there's no point in even bringing it up.

I don't really understand the "he was a Knick and I hate him" argument. If Roger Clements can be a Yankee and Michael Jordan can be a Wizard, I don't see why Ewing can't be a Rocket. Hell, Barkley was a hated rival and he became a popular Rocket.

The only thing I care about is his ability to teach.

    What does it matter?

How many of you hated Barkley before HE became a Rocket?

    Let's support Van Gundy.

? Did you ever watch him play? His signature scoring move was a baseline jumper, there is now way he "had no touch"

"Slow, lumbering"? When he was in his prime before his knees went, he used to be able to run the floor well for a big man. He was at least as fast up and down the Court as Yao, if not faster.

Yes, he was Hakeem's rival. Fortuantely, we won. Nobody thinks he's better than Hakeem, not even in New York, so there's no need to hate on him anymore.

Barkley never deprived Houston of an NCAA championship. Plus it's not like we have a bunch of long-time Rockets, with a lone Knick coming aboard. We now have a bench full of Knicks, and no player that's been around longer than 4 years. Obviously that's fine with some people. I have a bit of a problem with it. I like to have some sort of bond with my team, and I don't feel like I have much of one anymore.

Sports is a business man, career rockets like Rudy are rare. Now Pat's job is to make sure the Rox win as much as possible, just like we want.

Who the hell cares who the assistant coaches are anyway? It's not like when the Rockets won the title, I jumped up and said; "GREAT for BILL BERRY!"

I hope Yao crushes him in practice and gets him fired the first week. Do it, Yao. Make us proud.

Much better options out there. I hate Ewing.

I can't bring myself to wish him luck. I hope he gets crushed.

My bond with the team is that it exists, has the same name and plays in the same city. Other than that, I could care less who the players, coaches or ball boys are as long as they contribute to a winning organization.

Your standards are awfully low. So you'd be cool with, say, a starting lineup that included Stockton, Malone, and Pippen? What about a team full of skinheads or KKK members? Anything for the win?
