My thoughts - Wade Phillips was tap dancing like mad in that interview. Nowhere does he say "he covered guys well" - read it a couple times. All he can say is that the team did well, and he was on the field while it happened. That was political debate worthy question evasion. I translate it as: "Word has come down that I won't be getting much more help on my side of the ball after last year's spending spree. I've been told that I need to make the Kareem Jackson: Bahdel-Fider thing work, so it is what it is. I'm still crossing my fingers we can sign Newman for cheap, or maybe Carmichael comes back strong, or maybe we strike gold on a DB with one of those 4th rounders."
I guess the 2ND FREAKING ROUND PICK B. Harris is a bust. I mean a 2nd round CB should be getting playing time his first year no? This guy could not even make it off the inactive list last year. I am all for bringing guys along slow but if he had any kind of talent he would have at least been in the mix for time at nickle.
1. No offseason to compete for a spot 2. Coaching felt more comfortable with veterans due to lack offseason 3. Defense was top 3 and major part of success 4. No need to throw a rookie in just because he was a 2nd round draft pick Give the kid a full offseason to compete before calling him a bust. Allen's departure should give him a chance to show what he has got.
Eh, Kareem was mediocre last year. That's a pretty big upgrade from the "terrible" of his rookie season.
CBs take a while to develop. It's wayyyyyy too early to call Harris a bust. 3rd year should be the year we see if KJ was worth a 1st rounder or not.
You're glossing over the part where he was disappointing in camp and wasn't able to challenge anyone for a backup spot. Too early to call him a bust...but he isn't going to save us from the Kareem Jackson Experience. This isn't like Ben Tate. Even Shiloh Keo got to slip into the secondary rotation some, and he stunk. Carmichael is the guy I have some hope for eventually cracking through, and IIRC, the coaching staff were projecting Harris to be a part of the nickel back rotation behind McCain.
Yes, but that was out of necessity due to the injury to Manning. I am not saying Harris is going to turn into a world beater, but I am willing to reserve judgement until he gets the benefit of a full offseason. If he can make half the improvement that KJ made between his rookie year and last(...yes, I know he has a ways to go still), then I think he can be a serviceable contributor. And who knows, with more meaningful PT that brings out more confidence, maybe his 2nd round pedigree will come out? I, too, am excited to see what Carmichael brings.
Hard to evaluate when he's off the field half the time. Can only continue being mediocre if there's someone else there to help keep him OFF the field.
Joel Dreessen to choose between Houston and Denver tomorrow morning, per John Mcclain. Gotta be tempting to get a shot at the starting job with Peyton Manning.
Calling Kareem mediocre this past season is being polite. He was still f'n awful. Got burned on a repeated basis. Not that Jason Allen didn't suck but at least he had some instincts.
This offseason sucks. Thank the good lord Arian and Myers resigned at least. Schaub / Yates Brown Smith Myers Caldwell Butler Casey Foster / Tate Daniels / Graham Johnson Walters Jones Smith Cody / Mitchell Watt Barwin Reed / Braman Cushing Sharpton Joseph Jackson Manning Quinn We've gotten worse. Less depth. Really hoping we sign some solid vets to plug the holes. We also have to be hoping for a homerun draft.
