If that is true that is music to my ears and everyone else in houston. But then again Boras is not going to like hearing that and is going to have to use the Mets to Leverage as much money as they can now.
For what its worth, a brother of a friend of mine works at WFAN in New York and the talk around the station is this...The Yanks decided that RJ was more important to the team than Beltran since poor pitching is what lost them the ALCS last year...and they will probably wind up settling for a guy like Tino to play 1B and let Bernie stay in CF...thats not to say they won't make an offer to Beltran, but the feeling is that they won't come in and blow everyone out of the water with a Steinbrenner-like offer. They have also heard from their various sources that Beltran actually does want to stay in Houston. Also, the Mets were supposedly leaning towards Delgado...not Beltran...and the fact that they may not have to worry about Beltran playing across town, they may make an offer but they won't go after him as hard as they would have if the Yankees were heavily involved. Hopefully, they have the right scoop.
Well, if the Yankees do not have interest in him then it makes it kinda hard to become part of their team don't you think? If an employer does not want you...guess what....you don't work for them.
I've read about this on a few other boards. Two Yankees boards and a Cubs' board. Edit: if it's the same thing
i sent emails to the guys on 610 seeing if they could verify any of it. we'll see. that's pretty big news, though...if true.
Here is one of the threads I read it on http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=ml-yankees&msg=113886.1&ctx=0
Max...this wasn't broadcasted on WFAN...I had lunch with my friend whose brother works at WFAN today. My friend is a huge Mets fan and has been following the whole thing as well so we were talking about it during lunch and he passed on the info his brother had given him earlier today.
it was NOT broadcast....WFAN is the Sports Radio station in NY...Mike and the Mad Dog station...home network of the Mets...not affiliated with ESPN to my knowledge
So basically it's the Astros bidding against .... no one? Boras has no leverage and no more cards to play. IMO the Mets were just a tool to try to make the Astros nervous enough to raise their offer. He'll be an Astro, it's only a matter of time before Boras caves in.
He actually said something that was interesting....he told me that the Mets were more interested in trading for Sosa than signing Beltran...possibly due to his friendship with Minaya...but that scares me because I think the Cubs would be a worse team to lose him to than the Mets or Yanks.
yeah..i agree. if he were a cub i'd vomit. in fact...i just imagined him in that uniform and i threw up a little in my mouth.
From everything that I've heard, Minaya said he would take on Sosa if the Cubs paid for nearly eighty percent of his remaining contract.
do you think the cubs would do that?? i'm thinking, no. but i'm biased because i don't want them to. i just can't imagine moving a player and still eating 80% of his freaking deal!!!
Realistically, I don't see a scenario such as that playing itself out. From what I understand, if Sammy is traded, a clause in his contract automatically activates his option year, thus making the "payoff" (at eight percent) in estimate, somewhere near thirty million dollars. There is a chance that Chicago could conceivably sign Beltran, as well as, maintain paying the remainder of Sammy's contract; but again, that situation is not likely.
