This is all I can find and some Mets fans think that site is BS Met sources: 'We got Beltran' By Mike McGann January 5, 2005 - Two separate sources within the Mets organization are telling New York Fan Sites that the team and prized free agent Carlos Beltran has reached agreement on a seven-year, $112 million contract to bring the All-Star to Flushing. The team would not confirm this report and NYFS could not get independent verification. (you need to register for the full article)
well if beltran does end up going for 7/112, I really hope that we find out what was the actual final offer from the Astros. Given the differences due to no state income tax and no city income tax in houston, one would think that our offer must have been substantially lower. i will reserve judgement until i find out what we offered though . . .
Vlad got 14 per year...7/112 comes to 16 per year. Take into account that Vlad had a bad back in his walk year, didn't get a chance to show the country what he could do in a playoff series and rising costs of players...oh, and basically assures us of signing the reigning Cy Young award winner...16 is right on the mark.
I hate Boras...I'm going freakin' paranoid...this whole thing has me checking in every few minutes to see if anything has gone down yet. The closer we get to the deadline and the less we are hearing makes me real nervous. Did I mention I hate Boras?
I approach this the same way i take other message board rumors in the GARM. 99% of the time their pure BS.
If Beltran wants to reallly time like hes been saying all along, why the hell would he go for the mets? Id find that to be a low class move and say good bye to the guy if thats the case. Though i dont think it is.
This reminds me of election night. Comewhatmay, I am ready to move on already. If Beltran goes to Flushing so be it. Life goes on and best wishes to Beltran. <-------optimistic face
790 just reported an update on Beltran. The Cubs made an offer similar to the Astros. That's a report out of CHI Astros 6 years 84 mill......nothing about NY
The way I see it is Beltran has no reason to be loyal to the Astros. If Drayton is low-balling him on the offer(s) and any of the other teams are offering much higher offers, then I don't like our chances. Hopefully, Drayton is not using the "no state tax" as reasoning in low-balling the offer or we will be disappointed. I think Drayton is probably being as cheap as he can be about the whole thing and it's going to cost us not only Beltran but Clemens. Next season will be memorable for the wasted attempt at re-signing Beltran, Clemens retiring, and the poor 2005 attendance record. Then, Drayton will go back to losing money and trimming the payroll in the hopes that we have a bunch of underpaid overachievers. Okay...that was a rant. But, nothing would surprise me at this point. LOL Surf
Well what if we're paying market value and the Mets come in and just overpay for him? If he's all about the money, he can go suffer through losing seasons in NY.
All this CRAP about "our offer may be less but what about the no state income tax" is a joke. When Drayton decided to go after ONE guy, he should have matched any offer and then said "Hey...our offers may be the same but ours is worth MORE because of the no state income tax" instead of offering less and using formulad to prove its the same amount
Well, from the Astros perspective, maybe it is right to overpay Beltran if they have to but by how much is the question? If we are not willing to beat other offers out there, then we really don't deserve him anyway. From a financial perspective, Beltran returning is going to drive Clemens to return and drive higher attendance as a return while also possibly ensuring another playoff run. Also, Beltran is one of...if not the...primary reasons we won our first playoff series EVER and came one game from advancing to the World Series. In that respect, he may be the most important player to wear an Astros uniform EVER. Without him, I think we would have crashed and burned against Atlanta yet again. I don't know what Drayton thinks as far as the money offered and the possible returns. Maybe he isn't worth it just like Nolan Ryan wasn't worth it and all the other high-priced players who performed but we didn't want to pay weren't worth it(yes...sarcasm). So, we let them go at the expense of the performance of the team. Of course, Biggio and Bagwell were exceptions.
