what kind of pics will the astros get? first rounders (not that it matters as much in baseball when compared to football and basketball)?

What would you guys say are the chances of Beltran landing in Houston?

After reading alll the articals and analyzing everything Im pretty sure Drayton will up the contract before its all said and done. He's not gona let the offseason pass by with nothing to show for it. The people of Houston have spoken and they want Beltran so Drayton will deliver.

Im gona go with an 80% chance he lands in Houston
    & of course 20% he dosn't.

They're called supplemental 1st round picks... and you choose them after all the other teams have picked after the first round.

And you're right, they really don't matter too much... although the 'Stros have done fairly well with their 1st round picks in this era (Billy Wagner, Lance Berkman, Brad Lidge, and maybe Chris Burke).

I was told by charlie palilo yesterday that the stros only get one compensation pick... i thought you would get 2 one from the team and one supplemental.

madmax.. And that makes good sense to me too. Players aren't created equally as far as the revenue they create. Just like you'd make a lot more profit from giving yao ming a huge contract than a bunch of no name guys the same amount of money...

They do need to sign at least someone though. Even if you don't count Beltran, when you let your leading RBI go (kent), I'm guessing the Astros know they have to make at least one signing to not look like they are going backwards

With the clock ticking like it is and other teams making offers (maybe mabey no) i'm sticking with my original 20% he's here, 80% he's somewhere else.

It depends on the type of free agent lost. Losing a "type A" free agent like Beltran means that we'd get a compensatory pick after the first round (called "sandwich picks", since they occur between the 2 rounds) as well as the first round pick of whatever team signs him. "Type B" free agents give you a sandwich pick between the 2nd and 3rd rounds plus plus the signing team's second rounder. "Type C" free agents just merit you a sandwich pick.

With 3 days left I will peg it at a good 40% chance we resign. :(

PS. I never expected it to get this far. My detest for Boras just increased.

really??? i was hearing pretty early on that as long as Boras was the agent, he'd go up until the final hour and use time as a tool.

Today, I drew up a list of MLB player movement (for work), and it was quite disheartening to have to completely skip the Astros. Literally every team has signed players away from other teams... except for us.

(And no, I have nothing new to add to the Beltran discussion. Source = on vacation.)

The ESPNNEWS "ticker" at the bottom of the TV screen is reporting that the Mets "are close to reaching a deal with Beltran."

Rumors on the net say the deal is 7 years, $112 mil. If that's the number, I think I would have matched if I was Drayton. But it's not my money...

our front office did all they could outside of caving in and giving boras a ridiculous contract. is carlos worth 40 mil more than Vlad? i don't think so. but he's getting it. we just move on.

This is an absolute, unadulterated f-up by Drayton if we lose him...especially if its 7/112. WAKE UP!!! You HAVE TO KNOW that Carlos would get AT LEAST 1 offer for over 100 million. If he wasn't willing to go over 100, he should have been looking at other possibilities all along...the fact that he dismissed every guy on the market and won't pony up for Carlos (if this is the case...could still be a rumor) shows pure stupidity and shows what a waste this entire offseason was.

I don't mind if Drayton had a max in mind and it was something like 7/105 and someone just beat him.
