No, that was a one time deal. They had a chance to add a franchise player who would lead this team for the next 7 years. That money wasn't going to be spent on multiple players.
Beltran employs Boras and not the other way around....if Beltran wanted to come here he should have grown some balls and done somethin about it esp. when our offer was so lucrative.....While I agree Boras is an assh*le, I give Carlos all the blame. Cant wait till we play the Mets......Im booing my head off.
Say McLane offered the 7/105 a month ago, there was no chance in hell that Boras/Beltran would take it. They would use the same strategy of using the deadline and the offer as leverage in order to obtain higher bids from other teams. It was a pipe dream that Beltran would sign early. Our best offer was not good enough-- I'm glad that McLane didn't pull a Tom Hicks and start bidding against himself and really screw the Astros' future.
Guys, I am sorry to hear about this as y'all got majorly screwed. However, this is more Beltran's fault than his hardass agent Bor-ass. The reason why I say that is as a Red Sox fan I had to endure some anxious moments in seeing if the Sox could re-sign Jason Varitek, a Bor-ass client (aren't all players Bor-ass clients?). Varitek was instrumental in the Red Sox success last season. Hell, they just recently named him captain of the team (only the 3rd time that they have had a captain in their history). Varitek probably got overpaid, but the point is that HE, JASON VARITEK, wanted to stay in Boston and told Bor-ass to make it happen. I know that I had read stories in which Beltran said he was happy in Houston and wanted to stay. Well, those were lies. Unlike Varitek, Carlos didn't care about loyalty, he only cared about the bling bling. Yes, Bor-ass didn't help this situation, but it is more the fault of Carlos Beltran that he did not re-sign with your team than his agent.
Absolutely Boras is a blood sucking leach, but then all agents are blood sucking leaches. If Beltran goes to the Mets for less than 10 million difference, he's an idiot.
I hope he's NOT joking. F*** Carlos Beltran he F**KIN deserves it. I hope we bean him when we visit NY 2nd week of season.
It could be worse yet. He still could sign with the cubs. How's that taste? FUKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
I doubt it was $105 million paid out over 7 years. Bagwell's contract has a whole lot of deferred money. I think Bagwell will still get paid well into his retirement on this contract. If Beltran is still getting going to be receiving payments on this contract when he is elderly, that definitely impacts the value of the contract. What is the present value of both contracts using AAA corporate bond interest rates? Until you know that, you will not know the exact difference between the two contracts. I'm going to guess that the difference is greater than $10 million.
Now I completely understand why Beltran needs all that money... Its going to take every cent of it to get that big ass mole removed from his face.
I just saw on a fantasy sports website called - talentedmrroto.com that the Stros are going after Alfonso Soriano. Carlos Beltran's decision to leave the Astros came as a shock to many in the industry, and will now spur Houston to acquire Alfonso Soriano from Texas, according to a National League executive. I wouldn't be surprised. We need the big bat....I bet Soriano would bat 2nd behind Bidge. I know he strikes out a lot, but he's fast and he's got real power.
unless it's from espn.com or anothe reliable news outlet, i wouldn't hold my breath on soriano. soriano's good, he strikes out a lot, but he's good. even IF we get him, the astros better lock him up early.
I dunno, it's just once you decide to concentrate soley on Beltran and not other free agents you have to be willing to beat any offer within reason. They had to have known that it was very very risky if they weren't going to offer him the most money.
What a horrible off season. We have gone from being right on the edge of going all the way, down to the middle of the pack.
According to Buster Olney, the sticking point was not deffered money.... it was a no-trade clause. The Astros wanted a "limited" one, whereas Beltran/Boras wanted a coplete no-trade. Take it for what you will. "A source familiar with the negotiations told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that the talks with Houston fell through Saturday night because the team would not give Beltran a full no-trade clause. Beltran and his agent, Scott Boras, were OK with the seven-year, $108 million deal from the Astros. But the offer included a "limited" no-trade clause -- a stipulation that turned out to be the fallout of those talks." http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1963185
Another part of the article that just irks me.... "Astros officials said an agreement was difficult to get in place Saturday night because of the logistics involved: Team staff was at the ballpark, owner Drayton McLane was at his home in Temple, Boras was at his home in Newport Beach, Calif., and Beltran was in Puerto Rico." Uhh... yeah...
