That and a token can get you a ride on the 7 train to see Carlos play at Shea if Drayton doesn't step up to the plate soon
I hope the Astros land Beltran as well, but overpaying for him at the expense of Oswalt, Berkman, and others would be a mistake.

Cost of living comparison based on this website To maintain the same standard of living, your salary of $17,000,000 in New York, NY could decrease to $6,746,377 in Houston, TX. Stated another way, it's 60.3% cheaper to live in Houston, TX than in New York, NY. Conversely, based on a salary of $15 million in Houston: To maintain the same standard of living, your salary of $15,000,000 in Houston, TX should increase to $37,798,069 in New York, NY. Stated another way, it's 152.0% more expensive to live in New York, NY than in Houston, TX.
I asked it if I would ever cheat on my wife No Chance I asked it if Carlos Beltran would be an astro next year Can not predict now At least there is still hope
That's pretty amazing stuff. What could the Yankees or Mets argument against those numbers be other that, "It's New York City"?
NYC is a bigger market....so you're more likely to get better marketing deals. I would still think no income tax is better, but this is their biggest counter.
That "cost of living" comparison is very flawed. The true comparison is how much the individual will spend living there (for 7 months of the year) as opposed to another location. Not how much he earns (except for looking at state income tax). Even given Patrick Ewing's profound argument that "We make alot of money, but we spend alot of money too," athletes save/invest most of their earnings. Kevin Garnett makes $20 mil a year, but he doesn't spend $20m a year. After Beltran retires, and during the offseason, he'll live wherever he wants to (Puerto Rico) and have to deal with the cost of living there.
Getting Beltran would be a once in a generation spot of luck for the 'stros. If we can't sign him though then we can always use the money for other help. Kind of late in the game to get much of value now but we can see how the team develops over the first few months and have tons of money to take on players in trade later in the year. In the meantime we get to see guys like Burke and Lane get their shot. Not exactly a bad thing. Last year raised some expectations that may not be attainable without Rocket, Beltran and a replacement bat for Kent. Cardds should easily duplicate last year. I would like to haev Beltran but can see the upside of passing as well.
franchise -- losing matheny and renteria hurt the cards a bit... but picking up hudson is scary for fans of other NL Central teams.
I agree...I think losing Womack will hurt them as well...and the chances of Chris Carpenter repeating last yr are slim...that being said, without Carlos, (and without him, there probably wont be a Roger) we won't make the playoffs...and I'll be pretty pissed since I just bought my season tickets 2 weeks ago
BTW... its Mulder, not Hudson. Hudson would have been scarier... Mulder is good, but he hasn't been fully healthy in a season for awhile (I don't buy the fact that he wasn't hurt after the ASB last year... he was AWFUL).
The also lost Tony Womack. Also, they got Mark Mulder. Tim Hudson was traded to the Braves. Even still, I don't think that Mulder is going to add that much to what they already have. There was clearly something wrong with him in the 2nd half of last season. If he hasn't gotten it fixed, he will have more problems. That said, the Cards have taken a huge hit this offseason. So far, they have only replaced Womack at 2nd with 75 yr old Roberto Alomar. No matter what they say, they can't replace Matheny's affect on their staff and they can't replace Renteria's defense and production at SS.
