1. yes...i think pettite is a better pitcher than williams...with a lot more upside at this point of their relative careers. 2. but he didn't. i don't know how willing alou would have been to take a $6 million deal to come back to Houston when he could get the same and close out his career playing with/for his father.
My source is driving me insane, so I'll pass on the favor: Assuming an official announcement isn't made in the next few hours, anyway (making any future post moot), I should know something fairly substantial by the afternoon. Source would not elaborate, but he insinuated that it was looking good for the Astros. On a related note, I could get murder reduced to manslaughter because the victim toyed with me, right? RIGHT?
I disagree. I think all along the plan was to let Kent leave. Knowing he wanted two years, we offered one guaranteed. There would have been an outcry if we'd just let him leave without even an offer, so the PR move was to make him an offer he'd certainly refuse, yet one that seemed fair. We knew we had a cheaper, younger option available at 2B in Burke, who's ready to start, and more pressing needs than retaining Kent. Would you board a commercial airliner that didn't have some contingency plans in case of equipment failure? Two engines instead of one, radio contact to signal for help, etc. A good business always has backup options if something falls through. And I'm not calling things a disaster, I just am questioning the strategy. I have that right.
This is like those 2 weeks between rumors and the reality of the Francis/Cat/Cato for T-Mac deal. I got no work done and spent entirely too much time on this web site. Thank goodness that I don't work at one of those companies that tracks such things. For good or bad, I know I can get back to work on Monday.
If this is what you believe, then we'll have to agree to disagree. Of course I wouldn't. Of course, I wouldn't assume that they didn't have one in the first place.
... And it still may. I should get a clear idea of what team Beltran is leaning towards, but that doesn't make it the final word (unless my source explicitly says "done deal," like he did with Clemens last year).
are we done yet? all kidding aside.....Vescey - what did your source say was the reason he thought it looked good for houston?
"Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?" "Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?" "Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?" "Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?" "Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?" "Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?" "Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?" "Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?" "Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?" "Can we go to Mt. Splashmore?"
I don't think it was a PR thing to offer Kent a contract. Most fans, myself included, didn't really want Kent back. I was suprised when they said they were stil interested in bringing Kent back. He was great in the playoffs, but his defense was killing us in the regular season. I have been watching Chris Burke for a couple of years now and it's time to give him a shot. I do understand your point about backup options. They are definitely less than they were a month ago. Just don't assume that they are screwed completely if the worst case scenario happens.
