Wait until next year. There should be plenty of guys available at a reasonable price.

what leads you to this conclusion?? both parts of the conclusion:

    1. career year;

    2. he likely won't repeat.

I'll give in to the part that he isn't likely to repeat the playoff performance.. but he broke records etc during that..

It'd be harder to get better than that, but he coudl still be amazingly good

Last year *was* a career year. He'd never even hit 30 dingers before, IIRC. His RBI's were up, too. He may sustain and even surpass that moving forward, or he may level out.

His defense and baserunning have always been that good, however, and to me that's the biggest value in his signing.

he had more RBI's in 99 and 02 than he did last year.

his OBP was higher in 03 than it was in 04

he had more hits in 99, 01 and 02 than he had in 04

bottom line, is Beltran has been pretty consistent for that past 5 seasons or so. this wasn't an out of the blue kind of year...not like an Adrian Beltre, or Brady Anderson kind of year. he was actually below his career average in a few stats.

One player isn't worth that much, unless you're the Yankees, Mets, or Red Sox. We can't afford to hamstring ourselves with these high-dollar contracts. It's bad enough that we have guys like Dan Miceli and Russ Springer in our bullpen. If we sign Beltran to this kind of money, who knows what kind of trash will fill the rest of our lineup.

Look at what happened to the Rangers after they signed A-Rod -> they absolutely sucked. Granted, they had other issues, but in baseball, one guy can't carry the team.

The Rangers problems stemmed from crappy contracts to Chan Ho Park, Rusty Greer and guys like that. It had nothing to do with A-Rod's deal.

Given the makeup of our team, and park and Beltran's abilities - this contract is worth every penny.

I guess my source from yesterday about Clemens was pretty dead on.

You are doing a good job, I can't wait that long. Only reason I waited 2 hours just now is that I was out doing a few things today.

When I am at home I am constantly checking the homepage of the bbs to see if someone has posted somthing new in this forum.

For one thing, Beltran won't be signing a contract anywhere close to the one A-Rod signed with Texas. Secondly, when a player of Beltran's pedigree comes around and you have an above-average chance to sign him, then you have to do it. There has been no indication that Drayton plans to dump salary in order to keep Beltran. He knows and appreciates the kind of player he is and knows that with him around with Berkman, Oswalt and Pettitte for the next few years, we have a great shot at going to and winning a World Series. McLane knows business and if he sees a shot to make tons of money for himself, he'll spend the money necessary to make it. What a lot of fans don't seem to comprehend is that we've never really had a realistic shot at a guy like that. Now that we do, McLane's doing all he can to keep him.

Also, Miceli was not a bad bullpen pitcher last season. He made a couple of mistakes in the playoffs, but he wasn't the weakest link by far. Bottom line is, good bullpen pitching comes relatively cheap. If we can get our hands on it, we'll take it, regardless if we sign Beltran or not.

Astros Say Latest Offer Is Final

maybe their offer is a little more than has been reported, surely it must be more like the mets $100 million offer than the $84-90 figures that have been reported.
