Fair enough on Bidge...I didn;t realize he made that little...as for MMP...I was under the impression that Enron put a decent amount of money up to help fund the stadium when they bought the naming rights
brutha...not only is there not silence...they're wildly cheered for!! bagwell always receives an ovation. down the stretch last season, people chanted "Bidg - E - O" everytime craig came to the plate or made a good play. these guys are fan favorites at MMP...there's no questioning that.
the stadium funding is what we voted on. we funded the stadium. even after the vote, the name of the stadium was still The Ballpark at Union Station. Enron subsequently bought naming rights.
purpurra is on 610 right now saying he would normally think a player of beltran's ilk would take the money. but he thinks beltran is different and hopes that he and his wife are ultimately the ones making the decision on this thing at the end, and not his agent who is concerned only about dollars.
To me, that says that he believes that the Mets offer is higher. And, that the Stros have no intention of matching. Dangerous words.
If the Mets are offering more than us and Beltran comes to Houston rather than NY. He would become an instant icon for taking less money and wanting to win for the city of Houston! I can see it now.. Beltran BELTS another homer into the C. Boxxes!
that would make him a hero in places even other than Houston, frankly. national sports shows around the country would catch wind of it, because he's such a huge free agent, and run with that. it would be a story.
Yep...that's why he's waiting till the last minute to see if he can get any other takers or get the Stros to out bid ourselves. We'll have to hold on for the ride till 1/8...
I wouldn't go that far. That statement might mean that the Astros are playing along with Borass by dishing out their own misinformation. So far, it seems like only two legitimate offers are on the table (Houston and Chicago) and as the deadline is approaching, Borass will do anything to get all teams involved thinking that the bar is continually being raised. Statements like that from Purpurra lead me to believe that the Astros are willing to sit and wait until the very end before upping the ante...therefore avoiding a bidding war against themselves. Did I ever mention to anyone that I can't stand Scott Borass' negotiation techniques??!?
Tigers say they are out of Beltran hunt By RONALD BLUM, AP Sports Writer January 5, 2005 NEW YORK (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers said they are out of talks to sign Carlos Beltran. The Houston Astros and New York Mets are trying to reach a deal with the All-Star outfielder, and the Chicago Cubs also might be in the hunt. The New York Yankees say they won't turn their attention to Beltran until later this week, after they complete negotiations on a contract extension with Randy Johnson that would allow them to finalize their trade with Arizona to acquire the Big Unit. Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said Wednesday that Beltran's price was too high for Detroit. Agent Scott Boras is seeking a deal worth more than $100 million for the 27-year-old center fielder. ``He's a player we like a great deal, as we've said all along, but where we are and what his situation is financially just doesn't mesh,'' Dombrowski said. Houston faces a Saturday deadline to re-sign Beltran or lose the ability to strike a deal until May 1. The Mets met with Beltran on Monday in Puerto Rico but have not publicly discussed what they are willing to offer, and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry wouldn't comment on any talks his team might be having on Beltran. Boras said that he continues to have negotiations but that no decision was imminent Wednesday. ``The process is starting to move along,'' he said. The Yankees' stance has become a wild card. While several New York officials are not in favor of pursuing Beltran, owner George Steinbrenner has said he won't make a decision until after the Johnson talks.
It's such a tough sell, I mean literally, Beltran hasn't been worth this kind of money statistically. I'd still do it. But statisically, it doesn't add up. And when next season rolls around I'm quite sure the fans will be left wanting more at this price. But even more important, Boras is eventually going to hit the threshhold that makes an owner ask themselves, is he really worth it, and that owner may just back out completely when looking at the stats. If Beltran does go to NY, hits .290, 26 HR, and 100 rbi. I suspect there will be hell to pay in the media. Gonna be interesting.
you mean hell to pay because they overpaid? because i'm looking at those numbers compared to vlad and albert and thinking, "wow...he ain't worth even $14mill/year."
I think he is definitely worth that money in Houston ... With that huge centerfield, I just don't think you can count out his defensive ability and speed in centerfield. Not to mention his tremendous base stealing capabilities. I think he is definitely at least as much as vlad and albert to Houston.
Only one player in the history of the game has had 4 straight seasons of at least 20HRs, 100 R, 100 RBIs and 30 SB...PAY HIM!
That is compelling and those numbers *are* impressive. The only thing is, similar arbitrarily gathered sets of stats can be gathered for lots of folks. Biggio is one of a select few to get 50 doubles and 50 steals. Bagwell is one of a select few to hit 30-100 five years in a row. I heard some last year that were *really* off-the-wall, making an average guy sound like a hall-of-famer, but unfortunately I can't remember them right now.
pay francis whatever he demands then, too. come on, guys...beltran is awesome. he's not pujols. he's not vlad. not yet. maybe he will be...but he hasn't earned that kind of jack, yet.
Exactly. And we're talking about paying him LOADS more than either of those guys. Of course, it's all about timing of free agency. He's signing long-term now...so he won't get that huge deal later, after he turns into pujols/vlad (if he does). Unless someone goes nuts like Phx did with Nash...long-term for a guy at the end of his prime. So really, you have to go on his potential to be one of those guys, cause he's thinking this is his only opportunity for tHAT big a contract. I still don't think he's worth going out of our limits for though...I like 7/105 at most.
