Rasmus and Marisnick When Gurriel is ready, he's not moving to RF. He's going to play 3B with Bregs in LF and Valbueno at 1B. They've said on multiple occasions that they'd prefer Marwin go back to being supersub rather than everyday starter.
As bad as Rasmus has been, I'd still bet on him being our best option to get hot and help the team. I don't mind Colby in CF. I was hopeful when Carlos has his two/three week "hot streak", but I've given up any hope. Unless the team surprisingly makes a trade for an OF, I'm good with Bregman in LF, Rasmus in CF, and Springer in RF.
Also, I really hope Bregman is in the 2 hole today. If you want to get a young player comfortable, then surrounding them with the other good hitters in your lineup is the best way to do that.
Was at the game yesterday and was thinking that would've been a good place to put him. And.. too many damn Wankey fans at the stadium yesterday. Hope the offense shuts them up tonight.
Our 4 best hitters went 5-14 with 2 walks.... they weren't horrible. A lineup shouldn't feature only 4 competent hitters anyways. It doesn't need 7-8 studs either to be successful, but we have 5 hitters who are <.220. That's asking alot for 4 players to compensate for. Can withstand two, maybe 3, sub .220 hitters at most and be an above average hitting team. No huge worry though.... upgrades are near.
I think anyone under .250 should be replaced in the lineup except for the catcher, otherwise the team has holes it has to overcome. 1986 Houston Astros: 1 C Alan Ashby# .257 . 2 1B Glenn Davis .265 3 2B Bill Doran# .276 4 SS Dickie Thon .248 5 3B Denny Walling .312 6 LF Jose Cruz .278 7 CF Billy Hatcher .258 . 8 RF Kevin Bass .311
2005 Houston Astros: 1 C Brad Ausmus .258 2 1B Lance Berkman# .293 3 2B Craig Biggio .264 4 SS Adam Everett .248 5 3B Morgan Ensberg .283 6 LF Chris Burke .248 7 CF Willy Taveras .291 8 RF Jason Lane .267
Batting average is still being overrated by so many fans. I thought that most have become more well informed about the statistics that actually matter.
Rasmus 50 games in was top 15 in walks. He can't even get a walk. Gomez will swing at anything. Though, batting average 'can be overrated" the point is the guys with the lowest batting average can't even get on base. If a pitch is about to hit them, they fly out of the way. what would biggio do?
I agree - let's use OPS+ http://www.fangraphs.com/library/offense/ops/ 1) Altuve 168 2) Correa 126 3) Springer 126 4) Valbuena 121 5) Castro 95 6) Gattis 95 7) Gonzalez 88 8) Rasmus 83 9) Gomez 63 10) Marisnick 53 Astros Team 101
If you aren't hitting for power either, then you're not really useful in a lineup. The Astros have power hitters, they really need a couple of players who can move the line along and not be a complete zero (strikeouts/little slugging/poor OBP/Mendoza Line). A single is still a better outcome than a K or DP.
This paints a more accurate picture of what we already know, I think. Overall, as a team, we're right at the league average, but how we get there is very telling. We rely on an INCREDIBLY top-heavy lineup that pretty much drops off a cliff towards the bottom of the order. Adding Gurriel and Bregman to the lineup, as well as perhaps even Tucker, can and will help our numbers moving forward.

I prefer this lineup. Gattis is better when he is catching. Marwin is back. Valbuena is behind Bregman instead of ahead. I prefer Rasmus in LF or CF. Is he injured. This is two starts in a row he is missing.
it does actually matter. it may not have the same importance as other statistics, but it's not a worthless stat. it's still a good basic snapshot of a player's hitting ability.
I agree. It is a good snapshot. Low averages generally mean high k rates. If you have a low avg/high k rate and 5 homers by late july, it should be over.
Probably because we're facing a LHP. Would you rather play a left-handed Rasmus who is 2-39 this month with only 2 walks and 17 K's? He's already 0-6 vs CC w/ 5 K's. Or do you want to play Tucker at LF who can't hit lefties either? Go-Go has been disappointing but he at least has faced CC and has better numbers against lefties. It's basically a case of not having better options against LHP until Gurriel comes up. When he does, I'm sure we'll see Gomez less.
He is so bad and such a negative force in the lineup that we shouldn't be counting on him until gurriel is ready. Any option is a better option.
