Before the game yesterday, @LAA 5.2 innings, 2 ER @COL 6.1 innings, 3 ER vs SEA 8 innings, 0 ER @ TOR 3.2 innings, 4R, 2 ER vs BAL 5.1 innings, 2 ER One bad start against Toronto, who then went on a winning streak that included scoring a ton of runs against everyone. Almost every game, he's solid and gives us a good chance to win, which is more than you can say for someone like Roberto Hernandez. I understand if people want him disciplined (even though I'd disagree, personally), but to say that he's a bad pitcher and that you want him traded and off the team is ridiculous imo.
If you're going to use the 'solid' argument, Hernandez had a 3.99 ERA in his first 8 starts before having the 3 miserable starts which led him to stellar bullpen performances. I have no problem with pitchers throwing the 'purpose' pitch as long as it isn't neck (or higher) high. However, pitchers and teams need to be smart about it and at that point in the game it was a dumb move.
True, but Obie has been "solid" for his career, given it hasn't been a very long one. Hernandez has not, and all of us pretty much saw him coming back down to Earth sooner or later. I'll give Obie the benefit of the doubt until he has multiple bad starts in a row. Personally, I have more confidence in putting Obie out there than Roberto (and Wojo and Straily), and definitely don't want him off the team because he made a mistake.
Hernandez has done great as a long reliever, he sucks as a starter, lets keep him as a reliever. Now, we need another starter, right now we have 3 strong ones, K, McCullers and VV. Now, Mc and VV will have some innings restrictions, and we are going to see some up and downs from the rookies. Other 2 are Feldman (when healthy) and McHugh. We need McHugh to be more consistent, as a strong number 4. Feldman, well, he is a number 5. We need a guy like Straily to be able to come back to what he was once before for the A's, and i think he is capable of it. Obie, yes, some good games, but i did not see much on his pitches. Now, an interesting option is going to be Feliz. Will he be a starter? reliever? Appel was hit hard in first game at Triple A. Is a pity that Straily has not done much, with all injuries and poor pitching from guys like Wojo, Hernandez, now Obie, the number 5 spot was for him to take. Lets see what happens. Appel?????
He has been doing this type of stuff all season. Losing games by passed balls, outs in key ABs, etc.. Conger has been better.
