his post-game comments are laughable..."this wont happen again". he's already used that once or twice this season. from roy's comments, he sounds like he doesn't have much respect for cooper either. cooper is in so far over his head it isn't even funny. and we have an owner who we all no will do nothing about it. this team should trade anybody and everybody possible other than pence and berkman, and if we are still hopeless at this point next year, unload berkman too. i'd much rather see youth and prospects play everyday, and not have any immediate expectations for them. it's time to pull the plug on this team.
Well I have always said Uncle Drayton will never have a winning team. At the beggining of the year he said " This is the team thats going to win it all..." and he really meant that !! Seriously McClane could care less about winning or loseing he just cares about making money and keeping George and Barbara Bush Happy !! As long as he's the owner the Astros will look just the same way they do now !!
Well DD they haven't been Hot in a while now !! Don't know if they ever will be again but seriously pitching is one thing but Damn they have some decent hitters so where are they
And it has been that way for quite a few years. Garner rode several late season rallies to the playoffs, until he didn't and got fired. Cooper at this rate will be lucky to be still employed in July.
Cooper has been extremely bad. I really didn't think they should have fired Garner. He was better than Cooper. Nope. You have to be popular to get fired as Astros manager. See Dierker, Larry and Garner, Phil. Cute, but not feasible. 1. No trade clauses. 2. No name players = no tickets sold = team in receivership. I do not know if you were around in the early to mid 1980s. I was. The team was awful every year. The team was in receivership, being run by the bank. Let's not repeat that. Really easy to say when it isn't your money. Going from 35,000 a game to 10,000 a game would financial ruin to the team, and possible contraction of the franchise. I can remember going to games in the Astrodome where the game was played in front of 8,000 people. I doubt the franchise would survive at all should that happen in the current economic environment of baseball.
On a sidenote: Another crushing Cardinals injury... but another Cardinals win. Now, it's Yadier Molina who's hurt. These guys are unbelievably lucky... and yet so very unlucky at the same time. Stupid full-strength Astros can't make up ground on the Cards.
sadly, i agree that garner was better than cooper. that isn't an endorsement of garner though. firing him was the right call. he was a lousy manager too, and it was his time. he needed to be replaced with somebody competent though. berkman, lee, and oswalt have no-trade clauses. am i missing anybody? does tejada? i said to keep berkman, and roy really seems to be getting disenchanted with cooper and his comments in the past when trade rumors involving him were swirling didnt seem to indicate that he'd block it. that leaves lee, the most urgent and obvious piece to trade. if you tell a player that you are going in another direction, and essentially dont want him, why would he oppose? i also dont even understand why he wouldnt want to be in the AL in the first place. i guess, as awful as he is at it, he may actually enjoy playing in the field (which i strangely respect him for). so, we'd still have berkman and pence, who are most likely the 2 players who fans want to see above everybody else anyway. we wouldnt be trading for no-names necessarily, and we wouldnt necessarily be uncompetitive. fans love having young up-and-comers to root for. either way, there is no way the attendance would suddenly drop from 30K+ to 10K. whatever though...i'm attempting to defend ideas that i fully realize would never ever happen with uncle drayton running the show. bottom line is, there is no way that we can continue to put this product out on the field. at minimum, lee needs to be traded if, for nothing else, to free up his absurd 17 mill/year. trading him for 1 single top flight pitching prospect would be plenty good. here's a more simple pipe dream/quick fix: trade lee for a pitching prospect, and sign yu darvish in the offseason for whatever amount of money it would take. and fire the hell out of cooper of course. and hire deshaies.
Nah, the Astros (as shown by their expected W/L) are right where they are. There's no way the Astros are going to do much with this pitching staff. I'm a bit surprised at the Cardinals myself. They're supposed to be equivalent to us, and yet somehow got the 2nd best record in the NL....
I hate it. What happens when the ball is thrown back? A home team player hast to walk over and get it. It's a stupid Wrigley Field tradition and it should stay there. I think the only thing I hate more is "the Wave."
The Astros are terrible this year (and last year, and the year before), but I disagree with the reasoning in this post: Hello, and welcome to 1995-2005. Why don't you google the top 5 winningest regular season teams, and the top 5 teams in terms of playoff appearances, and get back with me. Oh, and let me save you some time: "The only thing that matters is rings!!!1!!11!!1 "rolleyes"" M'kay. ...and we all knew he was an ace short of a deck when he said it. Wait a minute--didn't you just say "he really meant that !!" when he said he thought they could win it all? Which is it? Does he care about winning or not? It's 'McLane', btw. I can't believe there are still people who believe McLane doesn't spend. Want to look up the salary he traded for in Tejada? Or Lee's contract? Or how about what he paid: Bagwell, Kent, Clemens, Pettitte... oh, the facts have been pointed out SOOOO many times. Last season, the Astros had a top 5 payroll in MLB. The season before, too. Guess what? Drayton's front office may not be smart, but he ain't cheap. Unless, of course, one prefers to simply follow his whiny impressions rather than objectively look at the facts. Huh? Riiiight. Because they haven't changed a bit in the last few years! No changes at all. I love coming out to see the "good guys" play. I mean, Ensberg, Lane, Lidge, AEverett, Wheeler, Lamb, good ol' Garner managing and Purpura making stupid trades. This team hasn't changed a bit. I mean, all sarcasm aside, the team makes loads of changes trying to compete for a WS. Not that they are necessarily the *right* changes, but if you don't think this squad is different than last year's, your head is somewhere other than reality. ________________________________________________ Look, someone in that organization needs some vitriol aimed his way--I'm with you on that. But, I think it's misdirected when aimed at McLane. He shook things up; he tried to get better. He recognized the weakness was the farm; he went out and got a guy widely regarded for building the farm. The team changed almost every component overnight. Your vitriol may be much better placed at the feet of Wade, Cooper, or the players. Currently, as I pretty much expected the Astros to be mediocre this season, the only vitriol I really have is for the Braves. And Yankees fans.
Cooper's lost out there. Friday night with Wigginton was not being pinch run for and then actually attempting a steal was nuts. Yesterday's lineup was inexplicable. And then his protests afterwards... I don't think he's very long for this job.
I have no problem with it , but I'm not all for it either . Do what you want to with it . The thing is , when its thrown back , the ball usually ends up getting tossed back into the stands anyways .
Photoshop opportunity for you, radapharoah: I never believe that *****. It's not over until it's over. F' the pessimists.
You know, the likeability of a person is never an indicator of how he will do his job (see: Everett, Adam; Lane, Jason; et. al.), but I got the opportunity to meet Coop once and really liked him. I've been really pulling for him, but from what I hear, it's not looking so good.
