Villar isn't a great or even good player. That said, he's better than Dominguez and Fontana who probably are next up while we wait for Correa and Lowrie. He probably won't be on active roster much longer.
You say this: But then return with this passive-aggressive dig... You may understand advanced stats, but you seem rather dismissive of them. Just something I happened to pick up.
Advanced stats are valuable. For example we are starting to see advanced stats quantify and explain the basis for traditional held beliefs in baseball. Grantland has a very solid piece explaining in part how the Royals excellent defensive outfield and infield has made the Royals true era go from 4.10 to 3.50... Advanced stats are not everything and people can point out one group of stats and overlook another to prove their point, but to ignore them is foolish.
Someone said Villar has a .3 WAR this season and I dont think I saw anyone interpet that correctly. That means that he has been slightly better than a replacement level player not that he has been adding wins to the team. And he has a .1 on fangraphs which is the better one.
I'm just saying that with SOME players, they may show good advanced stats, and they may show good talent and ability But they simply do stupid things that hurt a team I'm sure the errors are a part of the evaluation, but when he just jogs from 1st to 2nd into a waiting ball for the third out of an inning, that is not something that the advanced stats would pick up on. I think advanced stats are awesome in looking for guys to draft, trade for, pick up off waivers. I think they are very good in scouting. I think for a large majority of players, they do tell a pretty good story of what is likely to happen for those guys I also think there are some players who just aren't ready to help a major league team win games, regardless of what their WAR is. I think Villar is one of those guys. Just my opinion
I agree with this very much. A guy like Luhnow (and our whole front office and probably coaching staff) would use advanced stats extensively, and use them to gain every advantage possible. They would use ALL of the advanced stats they have, to make decisions An internet poster (most, not all) would pick and choose one or two advanced stats that would help prove their point, and ignore others that would point to the other side.
Going to my first game of the season today. I'm expecting a lot of scoring against these two pitchers, both battling to retain their starting spots.
Advanced stats suggest Villar is a well below average player...but not as bad as Dominguez or Fontana and likely as good as a player in his position normally is.
I always like the WAR stat, and if it says he is .3 over, that is good enough for me. What is the number for Marwin???
Interesting DWAR on Villar plus .2 DWAR on Lowrie negative .2 Also in the negative are Springers, Rasmus, Carter is worse on our team negative .5
That is what i like about Tucker, usually gives you a good at bat, no matter what happen. Springer, not good. Altuve, bad at bat, weak fly ball. Tucker, good swings, one fly ball out of the ball park foul. Have we see ONE bad at bat by Tucker???? Always battles like a professional hitter.
Please take the advanced stats discussion to its own thread. This is the game thread and needs to be about the game.
