I mean...have you seen how close each game has been this year? lol A few unlucky breaks and we could be 0-5.
Would be fantastic to get Mixon back soon. Even if it's not this week and we have to wait until week 7.
Levis has had 1 great game. His first one. I’m not putting it past Drake Maye to sink and dunk to avoid pressure and surprise us since there is no film on him.
Games are like that consistently from week to week across the league. One possession games are overwhelmingly the norm. It’s why the NFL is such a compelling product…it leaned into parity a long time ago, and it’s worked big time.
Was literally talking about this in my sports economics class to my students on Wednesday.... when I was not ducking flying branches
It’s genius….it’s such a compelling product. I was in law school in 1997…no Oilers…very little rooting interest other than the Saints for me, who I picked because I love that city. Around that time, the great QBs of the league…the faces of the league…were gone or on their way out soon. It was a fairly boring time for the league, honestly. We had a Super Bowl with Kerry Collins and Trent Dilfer as the QBs. But the league kept putting in rules that would lead toward parity…routinely now bad teams beat good teams…and bad teams one year become really good teams that make the playoffs the following year. They’ve built not only America’s favorite sport….they’ve built America’s favorite entertainment option, and it’s not really close. Look at the most watch TV programs in a year and the NFL dominates the entire list. Nothing is close to it, really…and it wasn’t always like that even within my (old) lifetime.
Awesome!!! (I think…I mean it’s a tough job!) I was at UH and graduated law school in 2.5 years because I felt guilty cause my wife was teaching school to pay for us to live lol. I will say it was wildly entertaining watching Bud Adams’ team finish one yard short of a Super Bowl win cause **** those kids
Could the NBA incorporate some of these same rules toward parity? Or do they just simply play too many games...
I think the bigger problem is that the game doesn’t lend itself well to parity. There are very few players on an NBA roster compared to an NFL roster. If you have the best or next best or next next best player you’re in contention for a very long time…there are only 5 players on the floor at any one point. If you have 1 or (gasp) 2 of those kind of guys, there’s not much the league can do to mitigate against that to create some idea of parity. The other problem that I’ve always screamed about is the NBA lets wayyyyyyyy too many teams into the playoffs if they’re gonna bother to play 82 games. More teams get to the playoffs than not….so regular season games are whatever….and you see people get to their seats late because they’re drinking in the arena bars or whatever instead of getting to 1 of 82 where they already know that their team isn’t winning **** or will make the playoffs and might advance. The season structure is the worst of all leagues. You have to put a premium on making the playoffs…whether that’s less regular season games or less playoff teams, I don’t care. But game 48 ain’t all that compelling when more teams make the playoffs than don’t. But in football….aside from a QB (which still matters a ton obviously) teams can be competitive by addressing a few of the other 11 guys on the field at any one point…11 on one side…11 on the other…you can work with that and make the playoffs. And just making the playoffs is still an accomplishment in that league…as opposed to the NBA
Different beast because they play each other / all teams in NBA. NBA has the highest ratio of the favorite / better team coming out on top. (Premier League and MLB not far behind.) NHL has good parity as well. The NFL scheduling ensures you play each team in your division home & away (6 games) You play 2 other divisions (usually one AFC & one NFC) that everyone in your division plays = common opponents (8 games) Plus you play teams from your conference that finished in the same place as you. (3 games) I think that's how the scheduling goes. It was last I checked.
