If BOB knew the rules, he'd have declined the penalty so that they'd have had the ball at the point where Gabbert caught it with a loss of down. He doesn't know the rules so he accepted the penalty and gave them 7 yards AND the down. It's just part of why BOB is the worst coach in the NFL.

 

In a long list of totally bizarre playcalling by BOB, the 2nd screen pass is possibly the worst.

 

Probably been years since that has happened so the rule hasn't been reviewed. Now look for it to change next off season due to the attention it will receive.

Explain why he should have taken the timeout? To get an extra play before the 2 minute warning and stop the clock after the next play.
