Bad footwork is something he had last year and still has this year. So he hasn't developed in that regard. Obviously he isn't a chuck it and pray type of guy, but if you had semi decent safety play then how many points do the Colts realistically score. Pierce bomb over Ward(7 points). That tape is wild. Ward had a head start on Sting, in which Sting got behind him(Jimmie looks old). Piece bomb over Ward(7 points). Again... that had no business being completed. Colts- 15 points... 7 of those from a blocked punt that put the colts on the Texans 5 yard line. The other 8 came from AR zipping a zone beater by a LB who was actually in great coverage to pick that ball. I am not entirely sure he even saw Azeez who had a bad game in his own right. The tape is out on AR. Play soft zone and make him beat you with 5-10 yard balls in the middle of the field. He will throw picks because his footwork is inconsistent. He still hasn't figured out how to layer the ball as its 100mph fastballs. The problem you get with that as well, is that if you leave a ball up the receiver very easily can tip his own ball in the air for more turnovers. You aren't going to beat good teams like that.
Football can be wonky. Crazy stuff happens every game. We cant whatabout solely in our favor. Hell we could have lost that game courtesy of a coaching brainfart and poor clock awareness. Colts left points on the field too particularly from Richardsons bad accuracy to Mitchell. I dont think there is enough tape on Richardson yet - the guy has started less than 20 games from a collegiate to pro. The small amount of tape if you watch closely does evolve and his footwork is not as bad as some would argue. From last year to this year he looks more stable in his mechanics and less ancy to get out and run. If it were as easy as just perfecting dump off passes then I would pencil in AR as an MVP type player. I feel his biggest obstacle comes in the intermediate game - as you say 'layering passes' but most importantly throwing with anticipation in 20 yard intervals. How confident were you at the end of the game Sunday? Did you feel our defense was slowing him down and would have stopped a possible game winning drive? I say all of this as a guy more in awe of what Richardson can do and what problems that type of player will present to a team like ours who is trying to cement our position as contenders for the foreseeable future.
And yet here we are with a Passing % in the 40's... and horrible miss throws to wide open receivers. Again, I am not sure what you are picking up on footwork, but its not good and to say otherwise is bizarre.
I was extremely confident. The Texans weren't chunking. They were moving the chains at will. Richardson didn't move the ball excluding 3 big plays and was an interception risk any time he threw the ball over the middle of the field. Had Azeez not missed a tackle on 4th down in the red, they wouldn't have scored to make it 27 points. Had they not converted a well underthrown pass in what was a 50 50 ball at best, then its 4th and 15... Teams will adjust to bust or boom and he will struggle to move the ball if he isn't beating teams deep. Again, you won't win a lot of football games like that.
Thats the beauty of the fan eye. All that matters is that we won. It will be fun to kick around this conversation as the season(s) unfold. This team will need to learn how to stop the likes of AR/Allen/LJ/Hurts/Mahomes if they are going to claim the top spot in the sport.
Is it fan eye... Had AR's bad footwork here caused him to air mail it... look who was sitting underneath the route for a pick 6. Lots of luck involved here.
The throws by AR15 are the same throws he was making blindfolded at his pro day that made the Colts fall in love. I'm with you that other teams can adjust, like the Falcons with 2 ballhawks. But will we adjust? I just think it's a lot to demand from Ward to cover so much ground. It's never been his thing. His is luring the receivers in 'the kill zone' and finishing them off. I've seen Twitter analysts saying don't put too much stock into Richardson's big plays. One problem with that: 1 more match up with AR. another with Josh Allen. He is going to try it with speedy Shakir Followed by Skinny Lamar.
Teams are going to keep attacking the Texans deep until they put someone in the game who can stop them. Ward is a huge problem if thats who he is. Bulluck needs more snaps though. That range and ball skill is something this team absolutely needs with how aggressive there corners are.
You want to count them all @Verbal Christ :03 - Pitre Pick 6 had it not been airmailed on accident :10- Azeez- probably should have been picked but he plays defense :36- Bullock- is picked :48- Ward- uses two hands and its a pick as the ball is thrown behind the receiver 1:10- Bullock- Absolutely gets picked had the ball not been tipped. Richardson didn't see him. Richardson throwing 1 interception this game was an anomaly.
As the season progresses, it will become more obvious to you how flawed AR is and how unlikely he is to overcome those flaws. It's great to have a cannon arm, but if he can't consistently throw accurately or find the right receiver, the Colts will suffer fort it.
Cool beans. For me the only thing that really matters is game 2 on October 27 so I'll try to minimize my "mobile QB" rants as the season moves along. I disagree with the majority on AR, but thats cool it will get sorted organically.
Right - all of those were intermediate passing concepts. Not "dink and dunk" stuff. I've already told you that area of the field is his biggest weakness. Somehow this trash QB had his team within grasp of a win. Is it more an admonition on AR or on our own defense? Watching AR truck one of our DBs for a TD was not fun either while we're at it.
