I saw his show. he played football on the street in htown. he was just a kid who loved hanging with his friends and his family. he's a regular dude, plays video games. i got teary eyed when he got his first contract, he bought his mom and grandmom a huge house. he bought them plasma screens too! what an awesome guy!
But had there been a vote... I couldn't honestly see it ever passing (which is a likely reason why it never went to a vote). The eventual MMP/Reliant referendum vote BARELY passed, and the city rejected the Rockets arena the first time around as well. The Oilers leaving actually helped pave the way to expedite the stadium-building process in Houston... we all take the new stadiums for granted now, but many people don't remember the days when it seemed like these things would never happen in Houston.
you're right. i doubt it would have passed, either. certainly not the "bud dome" proposal. i think they could have built an open-air facility without a vote. i seem to remember lanier saying that. not sure what mechanism would have funded it though, so maybe i'm wrong.
yeah we root for a Houston Kid who lived 6 miles from the stadium and who rocked the Astrodome with Madison. Who represented my texas college. my membership for being a FAN isnt free. I'm not going to be loyalty for the sake of hometownness. I'm not loving ENRON. open your eyes, there was the 2nd largest attendance for a reason. I'll put race into this. You see little african american kids wearing david carr jerseys? No they wear VINCE YOUNGS. why? cause these kids went to HISD and grew up in neighborhoods like him and he's GOOOD. We're Rocket fans, you don't see us wearing SCOTT PADGET jerseys do you ya? we wear Yao and Tmac cause they are good.
Well, I was really agreeing with your post until you wrote this. This last paragraph is undoubtedly one of the most insane pieces of drivel ever posted on here. I'm white and a Vince Young fan. What does that make me? Umm. Maybe people don't wear Carr and Padgett jerseys because they suck?
ace's you got my point mixed up. 2 things. kids who are african relate with vince young. kids likes wearing players jerseys who do not suck. that's why i brought up scott padget, not cause he's white, cause's not got as good as yao and tmac.
Check out David Carr's Wikipedia. Pure gold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Carr Period of Inexplicable Failure From 2002-2005, David Carr was terrible. In February 2006, Carr's contract with the Houston Texans was extended for three more years, a move that caused some controversy among the fan base. The Texans, by virtue of their league-worst 2005 record, held the first pick of the 2006 NFL draft (ultimately used to select Mario Williams of NC State). There was substantial support among Houston fans for the Texans to instead select Houston native and former University of Texas Longhorn quarterback Vince Young, given Carr's struggles and Young's performance in leading the Longhorns to the 2006 national championship, and allow Carr to become a free agent. However, new coach Gary Kubiak backed Carr, and was instrumental in convincing the organization to extend Carr's contract and pass on Young. Of course, this way largely due to the fact that Kubiak went to Texas A&M University, got a 950 on his SAT, has no reasoning ability, and refused to draft a Longhorn. On December 10, 2006, the Texans lost to the Tennessee Titans 26-20 in overtime on a 39 yard run by Vince Young. After the game, Carr could be seen shouting "I'm done! I'm done!" into the stands and witnesses at the scene described a "large brown stain" in the back of his white pants.
I was at the game today, my first ever (does the credit card system always go down while nothing happens to the ATMs???) When the Titans won that coin flip, it felt like the whole stadium knew what was comming and even people who had been cheering for the Texans the whole game started clapping for Vince after he scored the game winning TD. I was a Bush person and I know I was wrong and have no problem admitting it.
Man, it must blow chunks to be a hard-core Texan fan tonight... two of the top 5 plays of the day are by guys the Texans could have drafted this year.
The way they had played in the 90's up to the yr Adams demanded the new stadium was 4 straight 10 plus win seasons from 90-93, 4 straight playoff appearances, a 12 win season in 93. Sure that team had some gutwrenching playoff losses. But they also had 3 future Hall of Fame players in their prime in Munchak, Matthews, and Moon. They were an exciting team with an identity (run n shoot). What the Texans have given Houston thru 5 yrs is 5 yrs similar to the inept 94 Oilers with few good players, zero identity, and a very bland, completely mismanaged product. Don't kid yourself that Houston's apathy wasn't a factor in the move to Nashville. Bob Lanier and the Houston fans, who were frustrated with the tough playoff losses thought Bud was bluffing. They built new and much more expensive stadiums for the Texans, Rockets, and Stros. One day Bob Mcnair will be the one demanding a new stadium, don't kid yourself. It's not fair that this things are this way, but some Texans fans act like Bud Adams is the only owner in pro sports who values money and the others are benevolent philantropists. Is Drayton McClane not a cheapa$$? Yet, you support the Astros. Bud Adams, for all his faults, was one of the pioneers of the NFL along with Lamar Hunt. He also made Warren Moon the first player in the NFL with a million dollar contract. This is a city that nearly lost the Rockets after the fiasco with the Oilers. The first referendum actually failed and Les Alexander came awfully close to bolting. It's not a town which supports it's team's well. This is why the situation was so different than what happened with Cleveland, who fought tooth and nail to keep the Browns in town. It's absolutely amazing that more Houstonians don't blame Bob Lanier for what happened. Just ignorance about the situation. The bottomline is that he tried to call a bluff and miscalculated and the city had to pay multiples more of $ to keep a team than it would have were it to meet Adams' requests and inherited a crap product which is completely misrun from the top all the way down. Most pro sports owners like Al Davis, Steinbrenner, Drayton Mclane, etc are shrewd businessmen. It ain't only bud.
WOW! Just read through the posts--- blah blah blah.... emotional aren't we? Here has been my take- 1. I am a Texan fan (although my son burned his David Carr poster right after the game.) 2. After year 2 I believed David Carr was a mistake. 3. I am not a UT fan so I did not support UT, but I liked VY because of the obvious and special talent. 4. I cannot stand USC so I was hyped up big time for VY and UT to win the Rose Bowl. 5. I watched enough of VY at UT to see he was a once in a lifetime QB 6. Texans get #1 pick 7. I start the campaign for drafting VY (if he comes out) 8. VY comes out- this is a football decision NO BRAINER- VY is the OBVIOUS best player coming out (in a while BTW) From a football stand point only drafting VY #1 was easy to see the right thing. He had GREATNESS STAMPED ON HIM! I could have cared less what the so called 'Experts' said about him. He had it. 9. The Texans made a colossal error and passed VY- STUPID 10. I am not a Titans fan and I can't stand David Carr, but passing on VY was just a STUPID football move. Here is a post I made in this forum from last Dec. before the Rose Bowl Posted Dec. 2005-If by chance Vince Young comes out this draft here is why I would take him over Bush. 1. V. Young could be a once in lifetime freakish athlete who can dominate at the next level. He is larger and stronger than Michael Vick just as elusive and fast, and may be a better passer. He has not shown to be injury prone as Vick was both in college and with the Falcons. In short V. Young has more potential coming out than M. Vick had. 2. V. Young will touch the ball every play on offense. The pressure he will put on defenses can open up the running and the passing game. Teams will be limited in how he is rushed in an attempt to keep him in the pocket. Anytime he can step up and run he can make a big play. Much like M. Vick teams will have to scheme for his running ability. 3. No previous NFL QB has had his tools- size 6'-5", 225 lbs., 4.5 speed, elusiveness and strength. He may be a one of a kind QB. 4. It is overblown that he may not adjust to NFL defenses. He has already proven he can pass against the best college defenses, with good coaching and time he has shown the aptitude to improve each season as a passer. 5. R. Bush has never 'carried' the load as a runner. R. Bush has the skills to be like Gayle Sayers but it is still a gamble that he can carry 20-25 times a game in the NFL for 16 games. He may be = to Marshall Faulk but is Faulk more valuable than M. Vick to a team? I would take a healthy Vick in prime over a healthy Faulk in prime. (edit- in a later post I apologized for such a dumb comment- Faulk>Vick) 6. If you have to pass on one of the two what are the odds of one or the other becoming a dominating hall of fame type player. I think at this point V. Young has more 'P'otential to be great. I posted alot more leading up to the draft- WARNING us not to pass on VY- Extending Carr was STUPID- Kubiak you are forgiven, please don't ever do something like this to us again. I said this before the season- VY will go to a Super Bowl before David Carr leads the Texans to the playoffs. I cannot understand how Dan Reeves and Casserly and Kubiak couldn't see VY over David Carr. I have been calling into 610 and making this argument since last Dec. - Passing VY is the biggest draft mistake in Houston sports history. BECAUSE I am a Texan fan I am that we would do something this bad. BECAUSE I am a Texan fan I wanted VY. I love Houston Sports and passing on VY has ruined my Texan dreams!!!!! The Organization should man up and come out and admit the stupid mistake. Just take responsibility and say we blew and I would respect and be so proud of them and then I could move on. The reason I can get over this is because the Texans still are trying to defend their inept move and treat us fans like we are ignorant.
For those of you who are waiting for the Texans to admit ANYTHING, don't hold your breath. And even if they did, then what? If you wanted them to draft VY then you should feel all the redemption you need right now. I was at the game as well. Everyone in that stadium knew what was coming. As a fan of the Texans, it made me sick. As a fan of sports in general, I feel priveledged to have been there to witness something like that in person. I tipped my Texan cap to every single person wearing a VY jersey as they walked past me heading up the steps after it was over. I am quite sure that this has to be an amazing feeling of redemption for each and every one of you. You've earned the right to gloat. Having said all that, I am still going to root for the Texans. I am still going to root for any player wearing a Texans jersey. If that makes me stupid and a loser, well so be it. I'm not going to dwell on whether the Texans made a mistake last April, because now it doesn't matter. All I know is that even after all that's happened since, they still had clearly the best draft they've had since their inception and a lot of it has to do with smarter people running the show. I guess I am in the minority and felt like Kubiak and Smith knew what they were doing. I also feel like I am in the minority for feeling like the jury's still out on this draft. Despite all that's gone wrong this season, as a fan of the team (and I can call myself that because I CHOOSE to root for them) I am still excited about the future. I'm excited that there may be someone else taking the snaps next season. I'm excited about our amazing new middle linebacker, tight end and offensive linemen. I'm not sure what to make of Mario Williams yet, but personally I am holding judgment. So, gloat away, VY fans. Gloat away Titan fan. I am sure that those of you who are living here in Houston and wanted Vince to play for the Texans are even more angry now than ever. You should be. You wanted Vince and the Texans didn't. If this whole situation makes you decide to never root for the Texans again, then good luck to you and your new team. And I hope that Vince continues to represent our city with class as he has done all his sports career. Today sucks, but life goes on. The Texans will win one day. It may be a few years from now, but it will happen.
same stuff you're hearing here. stadium was divided. the texans missed big time. praise for VY. macilvoy said he was tired of seeing carr rack up stats with 5 yard passes...called his numbers deceptive. lance z. said that there's no point running play-action if you're never gonna throw down field...all you're doing is making it harder for the running game to succeed because they know you're not gonna throw over their heads.
