At least this will be guaranteed to be televised in Austin. Texans have some bulletin board material. Not from the Titans...from us. Texans 27 Titans 10
A very fair point indeed....notice how absent Ric has been with his lame....players don't inspire others take? Ric???????? Where are you now boy !!! DD
As someone who is trying hard to embrace the Texans I find the defending of Carr to be incredulous. How can anyone defend him or his record. I want accountability from my team. Right now, Titans and Texans have my loyalty divided....I followed the Titans after they left Houston and had finally kicked that jones until they drafted Vince..... He is so fun to watch, and Jeff Fisher is a GREAT coach and a nice guy..... And Bud Adams gets villified for nothing other than being a shrewd businessman. DD
I think the Texans will win...The reason, Carr...Yeah, I know, but I have a feeling he'll be even more pumped up for this weekend than we think...Besides, Sage isn't available and I don't think Van Pelt will see the field... Texans: 24 VY: 17
That's not the extent of it, DaDa. Bud was despised in this community for years. Not just because of the way he handled the Oilers.
Not by everyone. Sure he had some critics, but he was the first one to give a million dollar contract (Warren Moon) and also was the one who brought pro football to Houston. I am convinced that Bud never wanted to leave, but the landscape of the business was changing, and he made it clear that the Astrodome, sucked....which it did. It was bad timing because the city had just upgraded it a few years before, but clearly he wanted to stay, judging by him offering to pay $60 million of his OWN money to help build a stadium....something that none of the other owners in the NFL would even consider. DD
Here's the problem with Bud. He was here for many, many years. He didn't make ONE FRIEND in the business community to stand up for him to say, "come on, guys...we need to get that guy a stadium." No one did. There was zero reaction from the business community. His reputation was dirt here, completely aside from the way he ran the Oilers. Had some critics?? DaDa, it was far worse than that. Far worse. Remember that he demanded a new downtown stadium for the Rockets to play in. Remember that he presented his proposal to the city saying, "the Rockets will play there, too!!" And remember the Rockets saying, "uh...we never said that. we have zero interest in playing in a dome." Underhanded. Classic Bud. Again, just him living to his reputation. So he signs a deal to EXCLUSIVELY negotiate with Tennessee. Houston is no longer able to even offer a counter in these negotiations. He comes back with a deal. Houston says, "we'll build you an open-air stadium!!" He says, "no...i already have my deal." Done. End of story. I'm not suggesting to you that Lanier was perfect. But the mood of the community at the time was, "screw Bud!" A lot of that came from his reputation. A lot of that came from the perception he was bluffing since he had just told us he was moving to Jacksonville a few years earlier. And remember...we made changes to the Dome to keep him around, then...which he said were just fine...AND WE WERE STILL PAYING THE INTEREST ON THOSE LOANS WHEN HE DEMANDED A NEW STADIUM. Sorry...but that ain't the way to get what you want. I'm guessing you wouldn't do business like that.
I'm sure Jeff Fisher is going to give a lot of carries to Travis Henry to take the pressure off VY. At least that is what I am hoping since Henry is on my fantasy team.
If only we would have just given him that damn stadium when he asked for it. I mean in hindsight, the Astrodome was showing its age and was a piece of crap compared to these new age buildings. Not to mention it was technically a baseball building. We end up building the new building anyways and getting a crappy team to play in it with no identity or connection to the city or community. We hitch our star to a wimpy QB and an inept GM. The one chance they had to capture the imagination of the fans and they whiffed. I remember being a little boy and watching the Oilers. They made me cry twice. A Denver playoff game where Elway led them to a comeback win and the infamous Buffalo Bill fiasco. By the time Joe Montana, who was playing for the Kansas City Chiefs at the time did it again, I had almost grown numb and expected the worse and was usually rewarded. The truth is it still hurt but I didn't cry that time. I had convinced myself that I didn't care and did the same when I found out they were moving to Nashville and all of that. Now when I look back at it, those tears that I shed were painful but what I know now is that at least I cared enough about the team to get that emotional about a stupid game that we all played as kids and young adults. My whole day maybe even week was ruined when the Oilers lost. On the other hand, this team does nothing but piss me off every time I turn around. I don't get sad when they lose, I'm not really happy when they win. More or less I am usually so surprised when they win that I don't know how to react and end up feeling indifferent. Then I turn on the TV this past weekend and see Bush and Young doing things that are absolutely special so then I experienced a new feeling...we won but I was more pissed than ever! No tears though...
Bud is/was a first rate jerk. The city would have gladly shipped Bud out of town and kept the Oilers, sadly it just couldn't work out that way. Hey Bud remember this one? Super Bowl XXXIV St. Louis 23, Tennessee 16 The story of the Bud Adams franchise, always end up one yard short.
people need to learn to seperate the owner from the team. if Karl Malone drank Starbucks coffee, I'm not going to stop drinking Starbucks. where does it end? if Bud Adams started listening to Birdman and Little Wayne would you stop listening to them? no tear for me if Les Alexander is not the owner of the Rockets anymore. He got rid of Calvin and Rudy. Both of them CREATED the franchise and have their numbers hanging in the rafters.
Yeah good post...thanks for refreshing my memory on that but like I said in my last post, I sure wish things hadn't worked out like that now. Who would have thought this would have turned out so poorly for us fans here? Shiny new stadium, shiny new team with "cool" colors not that wimpy powder blue looking crap, and a people person for an owner with deep pockets. I actually think I hate Bud most for correct me if I'm wrong, taking the Oilers name with him and not allowing us to connect to our history like the Cleveland Browns expansion franchise was able to do.
I think Win Lose or Draw Carr Shaking Hands with V Young at the end of the game will be interesting I wonder will they shake hands Rocket River
