    But (you know the saying everything has two sides), it can also mean "strong" (there's a Chinese idiom to describe the physique of a strongly built man. The phrase, in really "clumsy" translation, is the [upper] body "bears" a certain resemblance to "tiger-like upper back and bear-like lower back"), and "bullish" -- may sound odd to you robbie, but it is actually not much different from "bearish" outside the realm of stock market.

    Bears: Around for 5 million years.

    Dinosaurs: Dead for over 65 million years.


    Conclusion: Yao is ahead of Shaq and Mourning by 60 million years :p

    Thanks for all of your efforts to keep us updated. I wish someone would do the same for TMAC!

    Regarding the comments by Shaq, I don't want to sound silly, but do you understand what he meant? When he said he and Mourning were "dinosaurs" that's a way of saying they were WAY past their moment of domination while Yao was a "bear," meaning he was impossible to defeat and was a handful on the court. Clearly it was meant as a compliment to Yao, and you are correct, I am sure Shaq never realized it might be taken as a slight.

    One time several years ago, Shaq commented that every dominant center has his time and then must pass the torch to the new dominant big man. He mentioned his respect for Hakeem Olajowan but that it had been his turn to win titles and dominate. Then he said his time was coming to an end and the Yao was to take his place.

    pryuen, thanks for your time and effort to post these photos.

    BTW, it seems there is not too much chemistry between Wang and Yao from these photos... or do I read too much into them?

    I think that's what he meant. Unfortunately black bear has the meaning of "stupid" in Chinese mainly due to a "bear picks corn" children's story :) This happens quite often when you speak to someone with a different culture background.

    Well, in his interview, Shaq obviously did not know the negative implication to Gou Xiong, a black bear in Chinese. He later sort of explain why he said Yao Ming is a bear.

    Okay.....just let me translate that portion of Shaq's interview regarding Yao Ming.

    Well, they have not played together for at least 5 years now. Besides Wang Zhizhi has yet totally rehabilitated. He dared not run and jump so as not to further alleviate his injury.

    That is why Jonas Kazlauskas hinted that most probably he will use Yi Jianlian more on 4 than Wang Zhizhi.

    Shaq should realise that Yao has already surpassed him as the Number 1 centre in the NBA.

    Shaq will not be Shaq if he admitted Yao Ming has already surpassed him. Come to think of it, I really like Shaq's attitude. Never say die. In other words, never admit your opponent is better than you. ;)

    Opposite of 'Hero', more like a dodger.

    In Chinese, Hero is pronounced as "Yin Xiong" while black bear as "Gou Xiong". There is one word different and we often sarcastically say someone dodges to avoid responsibilities as "Gou Xiong".

    But I do not think Shaq aware of such meaning in Chinese at all.
