Well China just scored their field goal (and 1) from Yi Jianlian, the guy who might be able to crack the NBA 2007 draft. and USA is leading 17-6.

for some odd reason, Shane Battier seems to be the focal point of the offense early on, he shot more than the other players in the first quarter....

Coach bemoans missing Yao

China's abysmal recent European tour, featuring seven losses and just one victory, made what is already known even more obvious: Yao Ming is needed back on court. Soon.

"Yao is definitely what we need most right now," said national team head coach Jonas Kaslauskas, a point proven by last night's heavy 119-73 defeat by Team USA. "We had some really tough games in Europe and back home. Without Yao, the team lost its confidence and leadership.

"For sure, Yao is one of the most dominant centres in the world, he is able to make every team stronger, not only China's national team but also every NBA team."

Yao, who plays for the Houston Rockets, started to train with the team last Thursday but the doctor said his recovery is still day-by-day, meaning it's too soon for him to return to court.

Kaslauskas' side lost to France, Lithuania, Spain, Angola and Serbia & Montenegro in succession during its European trip last month. A 47-point rout by France caused embarrassed fans and media to fear for the team in the upcoming World Championships in Japan starting August 19.

Adding salt to the wounds, forward Wang Zhizhi, widely believed to the best partner for Yao in the frontcourt, suffered a stretched left knee in the team's clash with Lithuania.

The experienced 2.13-metre sharp shooter is still only able to jog lightly, meaning his chances of appearing at the Worlds appear slim.

Joining Yao and Wang on the injury list is small forward Du Feng, and point guards Liu Wei and Gong Songlin.

"Right now, this is the hardest time for the national team, I am not saying this is an excuse, but the constant injuries are pushing us to a limit," Kaslauskas said. "I need six or seven more games to adjust the team but there are only three left in my schedule, so I hope Yao can join the team and make a difference."

The stats from the European tour show exactly how big a void 2.26 metre Yao leaves. No one was able to average more than 10 points per game. Yi Jianlian had a team-high 9.8 points while Mo Ke and national debutant Zhang Songtao had to settle for a miserable 2.8 and 2.6.

Rudy Tomjanovich, former head coach of the Houston Rockets, suggested it would be very difficult for China to achieve anything of note without Yao.

"It's a shame that Yao cannot compete with the team now," said Tomjanovich, who is with Team USA as a scout. "I think it will be a big challenge for China to play without Yao. He is the one to dominate the paint and defence, he can change the whole team."

Team USA and Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade echoed Tomjanovich's view, saying Yao is China's biggest weapon.

"He's like a scoring machine everywhere inside the paint, so we have to use a double team to stop him from scoring," said the 24-year-old NBA champion. "China will have some problems if Yao is not on the court, not only on scoring but also the defensive side of the game."

First ,my English is very poor,I hope you`ll understand what I said.
China VS USA,Shane Battier played 15minutes,and got 7 points . FG% -- 2 of 3,and 3P% -1 of 1. But the defence of Battier is most attractive. In 15minutes,he got 5 REs ,2 OFFs.

It will be FIBA 2nd Stankovic Continental Champion Cup tournament to be held in Nanjing August 10 ~ 15.

This FIBA tournament will feature national teams of China, Brazil, Germany, France, Australia and Greece.

China is grouped with Germany and Brazil, while Australia, France and Greece are in another group.

The preliminary will be:

August 11 China vs Germany
August 13 China vs Brazil

The semi final will be on the 14th and the Final will be on the 15th....with all the other games deciding 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th dispersed on the 14th and the 15th.

During the break, Shane Battier and Brad Miller went with a few USA Basketball and NBA staffers to a local electronic store to find some deals. Unfortunately, the mere presence of Battier and Miller led to a very chaotic situation in the store. Each was followed around the store by autograph and photo seekers. Flash bulbs were flashing all over the place. It became unmanageable so NBA security escorted the players back to the hotel. Again, the popularity of the players here in China was obvious. It's hard to imagine how popular Battier will be here in October when he officially takes the court as Yao Ming's Rockets' teammate.

Battier performed pretty well in that game against China. He made almost every shot and did a lot of tough work and taking charge on the defence side.

Is Battier giving Yao a hint that he will be Yao's PF? Shoulder to shoulder sounded pretty much like it.

It's possible. The closer we get to the world championships, the more information keeps coming out about Yao. The more info, the more interest.

Sina Sports: Keith, can you tell us the body conditions of players of this US team that have come to China to compete ? Any major injuries or sicknesses ?

Keith Jones: This troop is fine. They are feeling great and everyone is healthy.

Sina Sports: After Yao Ming's return to China, have you been following up on the status of his rehabilitation ?

Keith Jones: I have. Continuously. This afternoon, I will have the opportunity to see Yao Ming. As far as I know, he has begun training again, and started playing. He might feel a bit sore, but looks like he will go full force in his preparation for the World Championship.

Sina Sports: Yao Ming used to have these problems with his strength and stamina when he first entered NBA. What do you think of him now ?

Keith Jones: Yao Ming is getting stronger and stronger. He has been working hard with Anthony Falsone in the off seasons, and coupled with the help from the strength and conditioning coaches of the Rockets, Yao Ming has vast improvement in his body and physical strength. Now you can see the new Yao Ming on the court; he has completely changed to be extremely formidable and very aggressive. Moreover, he is very young, and he works very hard.

Sina Sports: Regarding his rehabilitation, what will you suggest ?

Keith Jones: Just work as hard as he can. Yao Ming is a player of great self discipline, and he has no bad personal habits. He pays great attention to his own diet, and he works very hard; basically everything he did are deferred to a very high standard that he sets for himself. Like all you guys here in China have high expectation of Yao Ming, our Rockets team has also very high expectation of him. Yao Ming himself also has very high expectation of himself.

Sina Sports: In what areas you appreciate Yao Ming most ?

Keith Jones: Yao Ming craves to become a great player. He works diligently to improve his footwork, speed and strength. He also practice his shooting tirelessly, regardless whether it is hook shots or jump shots. He is fully aware of where his own deficiencies are. He just keeps on improving himself on all fronts in order to become an outstanding player. For Yao Ming, you don't need to give him any suggestion. He is a very diligent player.

Sina Sports: What about the other star on the Rockets, Tracy McGrady ? We heard that he is also rehabilitating well.

Keith Jones: Tracy is doing fine. He has a great summer. His back is 100% rehabilitated. Now, he comes to visit me 2 to 3 times every week to recieve therapy for his back, and also works on his strength and conditioning. We shall see a more healthy Tracy McGrady in the new season.

Sina Sports: Regarding the new season, what do you think are the keys to obtaining good results ?

Keith Jones: If we can keep our current team, no more trades, and no more injuries and sicknesses, then with the addition of players like Shane Battier and Kirk Snyder, I firmly believe, that if we can play the full season as a team, we will become a very strong team. Even though it is difficult to predict what will become of the Rockets in the new season, I believe, health is instrumental to our dream (for the championship). This is particularly true for the health of Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady.
