I think that that pretty much is the storyline for the whole fifth season. I wouldn't expect that to get closed until the end. Besides the whole newspaper angle that they introduced, the conflict between budget issues and 'things that need to be done' is the whole story of the 5th season. It strikes me as the same as the conflict between the detectives who see the need to take down the Barksfield/Bell mob and the bosses who are worried not directly about the crime, but about statistics and looking good. In fact, that is one of the main things that the show is about (at least on the 'institutional' side of things) - the conflict between good police work and practical (or not so practical) outside agendas. I see the same ‘conflict’ with the school-based plot last year and with the ‘Hampstertown’ story and the police guy getting reamed for trying something ‘dangerous’ the year before. I'm still pissed that Prop Joe got whacked, though. Every time I start to like one of the bad guys, I can tell they are about to die, with the exception of Omar. The thing with Omar living, is that he is pretty much the only 'gangster/street' character still alive from season one - or even season 2 or 3. I think that if none of the gangster types would have survive after 5 years, then that would be kind of unrealistic too. I agree that Marlo’s character is way too one dimensionally evil. That is probably why I can’t seem to get to like him. I’m pretty sure Partlow is going to die soon since they’ve started working really hard to humanize him lately - even talking about his kids and family.
Spoiler yeah. it's funny because we all knew he was lying his ass off but at the same time, i believed him...
I've only caught this season and its alright...A lot of things that I don't know so I'll need to watch season 1 - 4... I love that HBO on demand has the new episode out 1 week before they show it on their regular channel...
that's not hbo's style. hbo tries to keep a little realism. also, you know what's funny, I still remember omar planning on the heist last season. when he was watching the crew, for something particular, he and his boyfriend were watching omar and michael talking in the park. his boyfriend asked him something and omar said "he's just a boy". iow, omar really didn't think he could be taken down by a kid or even acknowledged them. So it was ironic, and i'm sure they planned on it happening like that.
By the way for those who can't wait - I download the torrents the Monday/Tuesday before the show airs. Apparently they're available ON DEMAND and ripped to the internet. I cringed after I posted about Omar because I didn't know if the show caught up yet - but I'm downloading Sunday's episode now. God I love this show!
I watched next Sunday's Ep. last sunday night at midnight as soon as it came to ON DEMAND. Spoiler Omar's escape from the morgue is incredible. He couldn't have done it without the help of Neo and Morpheus though!
I think also David Simon got sick of Omar being a cult phenomenon and people coming up to him at parties and saying how great they liked Omar, accordingly he took him down in an insignificant, inglorious way without even a squib in the paper.
Gotta love the FBI agent profiling the serial killer in front of McNulty. His expression was priceless.
Omar explains "The Escape": http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/02/michael_k_williams_of_the_wire.html#TheWireHBO I hope that explains everything. If it happened in real life, I don't see how it can't happen on The Wire.
Spoiler I didn't think that Omar escaped - although I could be wrong. I watched this last week and am still in awe over March 2's episode, so excuse me if my details are fuzzy. I recall the morgue employee looking at the body bags, realizing that the name tags on the white man and Omar's bags were mixed up, and switching them accordingly. I'm pretty sure Omar did not survive Kenard's shot; he was beginning to seem super human and I doubt that David Simon would allow Omar to cheat death in such a blatantly fictitious way. Just watched next week's (March 2nd) episode via OnDemand. Fantastic. Spoiler Snoop's death was done excellently. And in typical Wire fashion, I didn't see it coming until that exact moment. I was shaking in my chair muttering, "Oh, no. Oh, no," thinking that Michael was gon' get got. Also interesting to see Marlo's reaction to being told that Omar was looking for him and that news never got to him. I'd begun to lose respect for Marlo as a gangster before that - he was adopting the untouchable stance that got to Avon and Stringer and was losing sight of the Game. However, he suffered from poor, but loyal subordinates. In other news, it's really hitting the fan for McNulty. My prediction is that he dies in the finale - no way he takes it from the top brass by going to jail. A little alcohol poisoning, anybody?
Yeah was kind of being Spoiler facetious about that Thought this coming week's ep was great. Spoiler so good in fact that it seemed like the climax of the season, the finale sort of is more like an epilogue

It was Marlo's phone that they had a wiretap on. McNulty said that the number was that of the fake serial killer. At least that's what I got out of it. I could be wrong.
Here's what I think: Every warrant the Marlo gang was reading in the holding cell refers to an "an informed inside source" in reference to the telephones. Marlo and Chris figured it could only be Micheal ( leading them to send Snoop to get him). But I think DA Perleman and Colonel Daniels will figure out that Herc was the one that put the cops on the phone...and since he works for Levy, knowledge of the phones is privileged information and all the information tied to the phones and searches predicated on the information obtained from the phones may become inadmissible.....everybody but Chris walks.
