The thing that bothers me about Schaub is that he seems to get rattled if someone gets a good shot on him. I don't see this happen with Sage. We've invested two number two picks and a fortune into this guy and so far he's proving to be an average to slightly above average quarterback. It's amazing what we gave up for Schaub and even though Sage played just as well last year the Vikings wouldn't offer more than a 3rd rounder. I would have much rather started Sage last year, kept our two picks, and spent all that money to get someone like Michael Turner. Instead of Amobi Okoye we'd have LaRon Landry shoring up the secondary and two more very good players from the draft and a possible quality free agent as well. We might not have been as good last year but we'd be a lot better this year. Unfortunately it looks like this team lacks the talent to get us over that .500 hump because we spent draft picks and a bunch of money on over the hill players (Ahman Green) or pretty average type players (Greenwood, Schaub, Reeves).
I was just replying back to Lil Pun on the Mario/Bush comparison for Week 1 - not a season/career comparison. Both did great, but in the end, it's either a win or a loss. New Orleans won and the Texans lost for Week 1. And to those who think I'm resurrecting the Vince/Mario/Bush soap opera crap, I don't give a rats ass about it. Mario will always be my boy and I hope he has a great season.
Maybe at running back...but everywhere else is solid. You can complain about Schaub if you want but he's good enough for a team to be successful around him. The offense made tremendous strides last year and should continue this year, but the defense continues to be one of the bottom 10 in the league. That's where changes need to be made. For sure Weaver needs to be replaced on the end, possibly Travis Johnson, and I think the safeties should be evaluated. Brown and Demps are alright but we need another playmaker in the secondary.
I find it hard to blame Matt Schaub for the sins of his left tackle. Duane Brown was absolutely horrendous today. It seemed like he was beaten on every single play. He's just not ready. Bring back Salaam for now. He isn't exactly world class but at least we know he can do a decent job keeping the pocket alive for more than 2 seconds.
On the bright side, at least we are in a 3 way tie in our division. Colts losing at home to the Bears by 16 is more pathetic than the stunt the Texans pulled today.
wow, just watched sportscenter where they reshowed the "digital mario williams" segment followed by "highlights" of him from today. Despite mario having a couple of sacks, a forced fumble, and a bunch of impressive plays against the run they decided to show 3 clips where he couldnt get to the quarterback
My opinion, multi-sack games seem harder to get than good receiving games Extrapolating week 1 stats for every week, season total would be: Bush - 816 yds rushing (3.6 avg) 128 rec 1792 yds receiving 16 TDS Mario - 32 sacks 16 fumbles forced Bush would certainly have Hall of Fame numbers, Mario would just be out of this universe. Bush would get "double threat" credit but Mario also forced a fumble and created a turnover. Could go either way on this really...
Glad I missed this game. One one hand, it's the Steelers. Always a tough team that plays hard nosed. On the other hand, we never seem to be ready for the tough games. Seems like we are painting ourselves as a middle of the road team that can't win big games but will win enough games not to be considered pathetic. Dom Capers was suppose to be the safe pick for the first coach, but that turned out bad. Now I'm wondering about Kubiak, as he seemed like a safe pick also for the next coach. Does he have the personality that the players will emulate that will turn into a winning team?
Two things you need to win in this league, defense and a running game, and The Texans have neither. That is why teams like Jacksonville and Tennesse will always be better then us until we fix that.
The Texans sucked out all the anticipation I had for the NFL season. I mean, no fire. They didn't compete. Mario Williams was the only one that cared. Players like Travis Johnson are worthless. Why are the Steelers always able to generate a good pass rush and the Texans are never able to? The Texans have been been in the league 6 years and their defense still sucks. Richard Smith should be fired at mid-season if there is not noticeable improvement. To take the words of a famous former head coach..... "Well, what happened was, we got our ass kicked. we just got our ass totally kicked. We couldn’t do diddley poo offensively, we couldn’t make a first down, we couldn’t run the ball, we didn’t try to run the ball, we couldn’t complete a pass - we sucked. The second half, we sucked. We couldn't stop the run. Every time they got the ball, they went down and got points. We got our ass totally kicked in the second half - that's what it boiled down to. It was a horse**** performance in the second half. Horse****. I’m totally embarrassed and totally ashamed. Coaching did a horrible job. The players did a horrible job. We got our ass kicked in that second half. It sucked. It stunk."
Watching the Steelers [well listening] I kept thinking THEY RUN A 3-4 . . .. and get all kinds of penetration into the Texans Backfield I wondered. . why do we run a 4-3 again??? Rocket River
The Texans can't generate a pass rush because for the first 5 seasons they had a crappy coaching staff and front office that drafted horribly and coached the players they did draft horribly, and let (semi) talented players get away. The new regime comes in and gets a team that is void of talent at basically every single roster spot except one wide receiver. Please, think about that for a moment. The team had existed for 5 years and had one single good player on the roster. Therefore, the team has had to remake every roster spot in 2 offseasons. There just isn't enough money or draft picks to do that so quickly when you don't have even a decent base of talent to begin with. It's going to be 2 more years in my opinion before this team is a real threat. Oh sure, they may make the playoffs next season, but it will be one and done most likely imo. They still need a DE, at least one DT depending on Amobi, probably one CB, a safety, an OLB, a running back, and improvement on the 0-line. If they do a bang up job in the draft and free agency in the upcoming offseason, maybe they can do something special next year.
Plenty of teams run a 4-3 and get penetration. We don't get it with a 4-3 for the same reason we never got it with the 3-4: lack of talent. They get it so easily because they HAVE talent AND because our 0-line was awful.
Nah there's no point in that, since Denver has established an immutable NFL rule that you are not allowed to draft a running back on the first day of the draft because you don't need to, you can just plug in mid round guys and turn 'em into All Pros.
What went right?: Mario Williams...What went wrong?: Everything else... The thing that bothered me the most besides the turnovers (which you absolutely can't do at Heinz field and win...) was the offensive line. I thought the O-line really made strides in the preseason...Where was all the good cut blocks? The secondary didn't seem that bad, but still not good enough... There was also some bad officiating on the 4th down QB sneak in which Shaub obviously got in...But it set the tempo with the Steelers in early field position...In addition had the INT's not happened it would likely have been much closer in score...But that is water under it... The Texans overall defense has to get it together...Well like the announcers said, it's not as if you expected to go 16-0,...but if I were the coaches I'd be analyzing every bit of the game to improve...
Sadly, it looks like we need more defensive linemen. How the hell did that happen? We could probably use an offensive lineman or 8, as well. Don't forget a running back. Oh, and a safety and a real corner would be cool. Thanks in advance, Santa.
I'm not so sure. I think it would have just meant the Steelers amassed more offensive yardage before ultimately scoring. That's what it looked like, anyway.
