Got one look at Jalen Smith during rookie camp & OTAs and said... I'm out... lol That's my hope anyway. Darby would've made a great 3d CB Maybe he was mad I left him out of the Htown Hunters Squad (H2S): Sting; Lock; Hawk; CeeDee; & the Punisher. Need to come up with a nickname for Jalen Smith now... Edit: Jalen Smith already has nickname: J-Roc
From CoPilot.... If an NFL player retires before the season starts, the treatment of their signing bonus depends on how the contract was structured: Signing Bonus Basics A signing bonus is typically paid upfront and is often fully guaranteed. For salary cap purposes, the bonus is prorated over the length of the contract (e.g., a $10M bonus on a 5-year deal counts as $2M per year against the cap). If the Player Retires Early Bonus Already Paid: If the player has already received the signing bonus, they usually keep it, unless the team chooses to pursue repayment. Bonus Repayment (Forfeiture): Teams can attempt to recover a portion of the signing bonus corresponding to the unplayed years. This is allowed under the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), but it's not automatic and often depends on: The team’s decision to enforce repayment. The specific language in the contract. Whether the retirement is considered voluntary or due to injury. Cap Implications: The remaining prorated bonus accelerates and becomes a dead cap hit in the year the player retires Example: A player signs a 4-year deal with a $12M signing bonus. Retires after Year 1. The team may try to recoup $9M (for the remaining 3 years). The $9M also becomes a dead cap hit for the team. https://huffsports.com/football/what-happens-to-nfl-contract-when-player-retires/ Edit: looks like SB was $350K with $850K gtd
This is bizarre to me... so if a player wants to retire, their best move is to sign a 1 year deal with a signing bonus, and then retire after it's paid.
pretty much.... it's one of the reasons teams use / like performance incentives & agents hunt signing bonuses
Personally, I think its BS to have to pay him a dam dime. Retire if you want but you did sign a contract to play so he shouldn't get anything...............to be honest I didn't even realize he was on the team
