I would love for someone to clarify this for me. Can a team simply franchise tag a player at the end of his contract, therefore not allowing him to test free agency? Of course I know that only one player can be given this tag. This seems to be the case after I googled it. I never knew that there was even a non-exclusive franchise tag also. And if players are always so unhappy about it, why did the players union allow this inclusion in the cba?
All I know is that if Dunta isn't at camp by next week, he would have shown his true colors. The team has new coaches and are in fairly new set up but he doesn't show up. Right now the team needs him, with various corners banged up and if he is b****ing over a possible franchise tag, he really is just making it clear he doesn't care about the team's future. I feel for Rick Smith, by now I am sure, they probably weren't planning on using the franchise tag on Robinson anyway, considering all the guys coming up to FA next offseason including Owen Daniels but you'd hate to look like you are giving in to Dunta and set a precedent for future player hold outs.
Technically, Dunta isn't under contract. He is basically pigeonholed into only playing for the Texans next season. Dunta will get paid the same if he signs now or after training camp. Dunta will sign at the latest point possible to get credit for the season and make the most money. Dunta is not happy with the Texans and won't do them any favors. A CB of Dunta's skill is worth a lot and it shakes my confidence in the GM when an asset like this isn't taken care of. Granted, I think Dunta's agent is really an idiot too based on Dunta having no idea the Texans would franchise him. If Demeco and Daniels get locked up, it will help the GM's cred a lot.
First off, Dunta is not currently a top 10 CB...also, given the fact that he was coming off a MAJOR injury, there is no need for any team to make him the highest paid CB in the league until he proves it. The Texans offered him a contract, that by many sources, amounted to making Dunta one of the highest paid CBs in the league. Dunta refused to sign that. I dont know what else Robinson is expecting, but he has shown that he is a little b****. As far as Im concerned, he can take his whiny ass somewhere else. Im incredibly disappointed in him.
what gives me hope in the dunta crisis is the julius peppers situation. Every year he has demanded extensions, trades, yadda yadda but he is still playing for the panthers. Maybe we too can drag this out for another 3 years, let him walk when he is 30. =)
This is getting me fired up. Barwin had an exciting showing at the NLF combines, and I feared that he was just be a workout warrior. From all the interviews I read of him, he seems to have his head on straight and will play with a high motor. If Barwin merges as a consistent pass rusher opposite Mario, wow, what a steal at the second round he would be.
I understand Dunta is pissed about not getting the contract he wanted...but for chrissakes man...you're getting nearly $10 million this season. Get your ass in camp and prove to the Texans and the league that you're 100% so that you can get that long term deal.
I still have a bad feeling about Dunta missing a couple of games for some strange reason...He has gone Marbury on us...? Who knows.
Damn. (Jacques Reeves out 6-8 weeks with fractured fibula, Myers still being assessed ) Well, good news about Kyle getting the reins for the offense. Kubiak letting him have full control, like he did in the Bear's game last season where the Texans were 5 of 5 in the red zone for TD's.
I give you the injury thing. Healthy, I think he is a top 10 CB..barely. Even if he isn't, he's very close to it or he would not have been worth the franchise tag. Dunta has two years left as a Texan and then will be elsewhere.
I agree barring the injury, Dunta was a lower top 10 CB, and by far our most reliable DB, if only because the safeties got injured or the talent disparity on the other side of the field with faggins and then reeves. I had such high hopes that Dunta would remain and retire a Texan. He had that quote that went something like watch out for us next year. I want to blame the agent, since he's the common factor in the Daniels and Dunta dilemmas. Anytime you hear about an agent, it's never good news.
Good point, especially when you look at the way DeMeco has handled things. He fired his agent and things changed drastically, and while I'm sure he's still upset at no long-term deal, he's in camp for the benefit of the team. Daniels is in camp, but came in mouthing off to the media the first day. That really isn't going to get you anywhere. He's only there because he is under contract. Hopefully we'll have a good season and winning will cure all...these guys are only going to hurt themselves if this carries over into the season and impacts the team.
Some bold predictions from a football expert:....(courtesy of chron.com) For the last 50 years, Gil Brandt has scouted college players for the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL. In his 30 years (1960-89) as the Cowboys' director of player personnel, Brandt uncovered more nuggets than a gold miner. During his visit to the Texans' training camp over the weekend as part of the Sirius Radio broadcast crew, Brandt made two stunning predictions. First, Brandt predicted the Texans will win the AFC South. Then, he said rookie cornerback Glover Quin would become one of the biggest surprises in the league this season. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/6560934.html
richardjustice Texans are bringing in several CBs for tryouts, including former Bronco and Patriot Delta O'Neal. A former Bronco big surprise....but honestly not a bad move still wouldn't mind seeing them go after Chris McAllister!
O'neal started 10 games for the Patriots last season. Granted, the Pats were hit pretty hard by injuries last year, it's not like we plucked someone from a bad team.
Sheesh, the injuries are already piling up and we're not even to the first preseason game yet. What IS it with Houston teams lately? T-Mac, Yao, Oswalt, Berkman... I shudder to think who it will be with the Texans...
