Just got off a flight from Houston to Tampa. I was in first class and Dunta Robinson was sitting in the seat right in front of me. He lives in Bradenton, which is just south of Tampa. Obviously not a good sign that he's flying back to Florida now homeboy leaned his seat back and I had a nice view of his dreadlocks. He's got stains and dried up crusty mess in his hair. Looked as if it hadn't been washed in a long time. Gross
Couple of training camp tidbits from the Chron: Rookie linebacker Brian Cushing allowed veteran offensive tackle Eric Winston to give him a Mohawk as part of his rookie orientation. Cushing, whose shoulder-length hair had become his trademark at Southern California, took it like a man. The coaches hope losing his hair doesn't affect Cushing like it did Samson. Quick off the mark: In drills between the defensive and offensive linemen, rookie defensive end Connor Barwin blew by veteran offensive tackle Eric Winston. Defensive line coach Bill Kollar made them do it again. Barwin beat Winston a second time, and they got testy, resulting in tempers flaring briefly, but the pushing and shoving was quickly broken up. Helmet rattler: Cornerback Fred Bennett knocked his own helmet off after a hard hit to fullback Vonta Leach. Leach was running down the sideline right in front of the fans, and Bennett popped Leach, losing his own helmet in the process. Sending a message: The Texans offensive unit had to run after practice from goal line-to-goal line several times as punishment for turnovers. The Texans were third-worst in the NFL with 32 turnovers last season. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/6558934.html
That's awesome. Cushing seemed like a pretty down-to-earth guy in an interview I saw with him after he signed his contract. He knows he's a rookie and hasn't proved anything yet and seems eager to be coached. Besides that, his haircut was AWFUL. Never know how to take bits like this. Should we be happy that Barwin is already beating vets? Or should we be dismayed because a rookie is beating our vets? At any rate, there's nothing wrong with a little mixing it up during training camp. Keeps everyone nice and salty.
Don't forget that Barwin wasn't here for OTAs so he has relatively fresh legs. With that said, it's good to see that type of tenacity from our players.
maybe this is a reach, but I'm hoping this is the training camp where jacques is finally able to turn his head and look for the ball. Just a tad bit of an improvement in that area will go a long way. With the new coaches, I think he will finally get over. =)
Barwin is a rookie, missed OTA's, and fighting for playing time. I'm sure he's giving much more effort than Winston, who is a staple at right tackle at this point in his career. Winston isn't going to expend himself too much early in training camp, and he's probably not near game-shape at this point.
I remember reading somewhere that Reeves has been turning his head and playing for the ball much better in training camp, hopefully its a sign for things to come. Also, Kubiak mentioned after day 2 how Glover Quinn has been very impressive and has never seen a guy get his hands on so many balls (no joke necessary).
There's a clip of this at the end of the video. Barwin does a pretty nice bull rush on Winston pushing him back 4-5 yards, Winston gets a little frustrated and pushes Barwin after the play is over. But Amobi is the one who pushes Winston, not Barwin. I'M SO HAPPY FOOTBALL IS BACK!! http://www.houstontexans.com/tv/index.asp?mm_file_id=3278&play_clip=y
Obviously it's only one rep in training camp, but it's comforting to know that Duane Brown is going to be that much more improved this year after going up against Mario for a full year and another training camp. Also, I cringed watching Steve Slaton carry the ball in contact drills. I guess that's how you know when you have a good running back- you don't even want him to touch the ball until the regular season.
Is it me or did Slaton look a little stouter in those videos? Maybe it's just the way they have their jersey rolled up aroudn their chest.
nah I didn't take pics. First class passengers usually don't take pictures of other first class passengers. I did have to move his bag around in the overhead compartment to fit mine in. He had a really feminine-looking Louis Vuitton bag. How cute.
Speaking of Texans players on planes, Andre Johnson was a couple of seats away from me on my flight from LA back to Houston the other day.
