A lot of those signings are stop-gap signings before the draft. Putzier and Cowart didn't play because of the draft. Walter was a functional 3rd receiver. Flannigan was not spectacular by any means, but I thought he served his purpose. I thought Weaver was a little disappointing considering how much money the team invested on him. I personally think he'll play better if he sticks to one position. Moulds, well, you can blame it on Carr, the OT or on him. The fact is that he's gone now, so hopefully the team can find a decent receiver to compliment AJ next year.

Weaver was a big disappointment to me because they paid him a huge bonus and played him at DE when he should be playing at DT. Weaver brings no pass rush and the Texans wonder why the never get sacks.

Is this what the Texans would have to give a team to take Carr off our hands? :p

Based on my estimation, the moves so far have cleared 2.8 million off of the cap this year. If Moulds' bonus pay next year is accelerated to this year, the penalty and the cap relief from cutting him is basically a wash.

    Texans release three
    February 28, 2007
    By Nick Schenck
    HoustonTexans.com

With the free agency period beginning this Friday, the Texans cleared some room in their salary cap today by releasing veterans Zach Wiegert, Seth Payne and Eric Moulds.

The three players have a combined 33 NFL seasons under their belts, including 10 with the Texans. Each of the players started for the Texans at some point during the 2006 season, although Wiegert and Payne suffered knee injuries that cut their respective seasons short.

Texans general manager Rick Smith discussed the transactions in a statement released today by the team.

“We made some difficult decisions today in releasing these three veteran players," Smith said. "We appreciate the contributions that each made to our football team, organization and community."

Wiegert, a guard and tackle who finished with 48 career starts in Houston, joined the Texans in 2003 after spending the previous four years with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The native of Fremont, Neb. played four seasons in St. Louis to begin his career after the Rams selected him in the second round (38 th overall) of the 1995 NFL Draft out of Nebraska.

A defensive tackle, Payne came to the Texans in 2002 after the club selected him in the NFL expansion draft. Originally chosen by the Jaguars in the fourth round (114 th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft out of Cornell, Payne collected 151 tackles and nine sacks in Houston during his five-year tenure. He missed parts of the 2003 and 2006 seasons after tearing the ACL in each of his knees.

An 11-year pro, Moulds leaves after spending just one season in the Bayou City. Acquired last offseason from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2006 draft, Moulds caught 57 passes for 557 yards (9.8 avg.) in 2006, but finished with only one touchdown.

Joey Porter is now available? Need him? Want him? Afford him?

Well, the Texans are not going to get Tatum Bell from the Broncos.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/03/01/bc.fbn.lions.broncostra.ap/index.html

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Lions will trade cornerback Dre' Bly to the Denver Broncos for running back Tatum Bell, offensive tackle George Foster and a fifth-round pick, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the trade can't be finalized until Friday.

Both teams seemed to fill needs with the move, which gives Denver an All-Pro caliber player to replace the late Darrent Williams and allows Detroit to have more options in free agency and with the No. 2 pick overall in April.

Broncos spokesman Jim Saccomano said he couldn't confirm any deal.

Don't you put a grown man into a little box. Joey Porter can be anything he wants to be. He just has to study the defensive playbook.

Fred Smoot has been waived by the Vikings. I think he is worth a look as a CB solution.

It would appear Clements is off the board. Could be rumor so don't kill the messenger if it doesn't pan out...

Scheduled visits for the Texans the next couple of days include Denver Broncos free agent offensive lineman Cooper Carlisle, Green Bay running back Ahmen Green, Atlanta Falcons WR Ashley Lelie. Also I think they will go after Seattle Safety Ken Hamlin.
