So they're one upgrade at DT away from greatness? Okoye is merely a symptom of the disease: The back-to-back hiring of Smith and Bush was far more fatal. A competent, experienced defensive coach with a system in place either a) never sniffs Okoye; or b) coaches him up more effectively.
I will say I am but I know better because I say that every year. As soon as training camp starts up, I'll start drinking the kool-aid like I do every year. Part of the fun of being a fan, I guess. I usually don't go full-on Debbie Downer until around the bye-week.
Okoye has been a disappointment but let's not forget he was the #1 DT on the board so taking him. But obviously things hasnt worked out. However, having reevis at that pick rather than okoye would have drastically altered the texans history.
Did you not read the exchange that was posted before that? Of course I'm not being serious, but I can only sit back and imagine how much better of a place we'd be in if we had taken ANY of those DBs I mentioned over Okoye. It just sucked so hard with the timing of Dunta's injury, and then him subsequently becoming a malcontent. If only either of those things had come to bear before we picked Amobi... if only...
This is part of the slippery slope that is revisionism but... we don't know that. He would have been coached by Smith and Bush, who had a shoddy track record of developing players and a flawed system that was routinely exposed. Okoye *was* a top prospect, expected to go higher than 10th. Most thought he "fell" to the Texans. Had he gone to the Jets instead..........
The one that started: "Looking back at the 2007 draft, I get angry looking at how much DB talent we passed over for Amobi."? Again, we had terrible coaches and a terrible system - who's to say it wouldn't have failed the DBs, too?
i never said the history would have been better or worse but it certainly would have been different, i.e. they certainly wouldnt have drafted kareem. But yeah, it's all ridiculous hearsay but hey...there is nothing else to talk about right now. And regardless of who was coaching, i think it's fair to say that revis was going to be pretty good.
Here's the heart of why that's the case: The Texans haven't made the playoffs ever, and have one 9-win season in 9 tries. They've become an entertaining offense thanks to Kubiak, but ultimately there is precious little to stay positive about, especially with a front office culture that seems to be the biggest thorn in the franchise's development. Related, this city in general is mired in sports hell. Astros have become one of the very worst teams in MLB. Rockets are in between eras and banging their heads trying to find a franchise player to get them out of 0.500. I get the sense that I've been lumped in with the doom and gloom crowd, but I (doesn't everyone?) think I'm in the middle. I've stated and continue to believe they'll net 9 wins this year and have a better than thought of chance for taking the division for the first time. Ultimately, it is squarely on the Texans to squash the pessimism, skepticism, and cynicism. They've earned it in spades. They need to demonstrate that they can make the playoffs, they need to demonstrate that making the playoffs won't be enough. They need to win us over. Winning cures all.
After the Kareem pick I was very disappointed. I posted a very negative scouting report about him and was thoroughly attacked. I was right, the writers of the scouting report were right. However, there is little satisfaction in being right about the Texan's boneheaded moves. The Texans are operating with a good deal of forgiveness, I guess because fans are just thankful for any football; however, the good will is about to run out and if this season is a dud, it could get ugly. However, any improvement in the defense (and that shouldn't be hard) could make the team pretty good.
Reasons to feel good about this year: 1. You either have a strong QB or you don't, and we do. 2. We're pairing a top 10 QB with a top 3 WR and top 3 RB. 3a. Colts might be over the cap and have to make tough cuts. 3b. Colts are a year older and were looking it last year with the injuries. 3c. Manning may not be himself. 4. Jags are iffy. 5. Titans are rebooting. 6. The defense will be better. The defense is already better. 7. The Rice workouts could be huge. 8. Our schedule is no more difficult than anyone else's in the division, save Ten. 9. This team always flops when expectations are high, and expectations are not high at all. 10. Tenth time's the charm.
This, especially with that particular illustration, nails Texans fandom to a tee. That is precisely what it feels like to follow and love this team.
11. Frank bush will not be returning 12. Kareem Jackson will not be 1. Starting CB 13. Kubiaks job is Really on the line now
12. What makes you think that? Most likely, yes, a vet is brought in but its wide open after that. 13. Job has been on the line for a couple years now. From the fans perspective anyways. Job has never been on the line with Bob.
The real question is when will the football world recognize the scouting acumen of solid from clutchfans?
Per Nick Scurfield, no ketchup bottle look for Battle Red Day. It'll be red jerseys and white pants. The other five home games will be blue jerseys and white pants.
