I think it is crazy to have a negative view on signing Sensabaugh. He's a capable player.

It is sad that this franchise has been wholly unable to DRAFT league average players to fill out their roster and so they constantly have to spend more in FA to get them though.

Looking back at the 2007 draft, I get angry looking at how much DB talent we passed over for Amobi.

I'm not down on Sensabaugh, but if settle for him and don't go after Weddle, Joseph, Nnamdi, etc, I'll be disappointed (assuming we have the ability to offer them under the cap rules).

Don't forget Weddle played for Wade too in SD. I feel like we need to come away with both a legit safety and CB -- something like Weddle/Rogers or Sens./Joseph or Taylor. Nnamdi would be the only guy that might prohibit us from signing a safety.

In the past I've been forgiving about passing on free agency, but this is a great market for DBs and we are in desperate times.

For the record, I've been naming Sensabaugh for at least a couple of months...and never once have I suggested he's below average or a bad idea.

If I've got an issue, it's that the Texans aren't looking at any other options.
Wade wants Sensabaugh because he knows him, fine. The team decides Quin will switch positions and start without even a training camp.....start crossing fingers.
Weddle is out there, Roman Harper, Dawan Landry, and I believe Michael Huff.

Again, no issues with Sensabaugh...but this short circuited non-process of bringing in guys is dubious. And given our track record of both hires and free agent signees...maybe it's high time we rethink our recruitment strategy.

    Not at this hillbilly level.

McNair pals with his dad...bang, Wade Phillips has a job before the process even begins.
Kubiak works with his dad....bang, David Gibbs gets a secondary coaches job that he can't come close to handling.
Kubiak has to replace his first inept DC....bang, he in house hires poker buddy LB coach to take over despite the obvious call for a better hand at the helm.

The number of decisions that get made ahead of any semblance of an evaluation/hiring process is scary. I'm aware of coaching trees and bringing in system guys. But the Texans take it to an extreme that stunts their development as a franchise. "Comfortable with him" shouldn't dominate "does he have merit" this completely.

But we don't know how much they are considering other players. You don't know if they did evaluate the field and decide he is/was the best option.

Plus, you are complaining about a signing that hasnt even happened! At least wait until they actually start signing people.

Amobi was a critical pick that we totally whiffed on, a franchise crippler.

    He's our Tony Boselli 2.0.

At least in the case of Boselli we *had* to take a chance on him.

With Amobi, you can't do anything but blame Kubiak and Smith for an epic fail.

IMO, the Texans should've tried to do this

I know our best defense against Manning is our offense, but any edge you can get on him - even if it is just perception - has to help the defense out, right?

As a point of reference, look at the damage that Sage was (allegedly) able to inflict on our offense by consulting with the Giants' DC during the week leading up to our game last year?

They've lost that benefit of the doubt when it comes to me. Too many years of this crap.

Again, no issues with Sensabaugh as a player - I think he's a good guy to bring in......but this is the same exact "my guy" only process that led to the Ahman Green signing at dumb money. And I fully expect Sensabaugh to be overpaid as well.

This is the key to me. It's not that I have a problem with Sensabaugh, but if he is paid like a "well paid" safety that will suck. It's not that he's bad, it's that this team overpays for average or worse way too often.

I'm not sure what Ahman Green being overpaid has to do with whether or not Rick Smith has poor communication skills with players.

Guys, let's at least wait until the lockout is over before we start bagging on the FA signings. :)

Eh, I know that was the popular perception, but I think it was more a case of (surprise...) the Texans coming out totally unprepared to play.

Ahman Green specifically stated what was said to him on the John and Lance show.

His statements about Rick Smith's character were then backed up by Marcus Coleman (who FWIW has been saying this since day 1) and Lance Z's personal sources in the organization.

I see no reason to think that because Ahman Green was washed up he suddenly has no credibility when talking about how he was treated. Particularly when his statements fit a narrative that is supported by other players and media outlets.

My biggest issue with taking Amobi with that pick in 2007 was that he was so young and raw, that you knew he was a long term project and Texans need more true players who could start to show something earlier than that.

Having said that I'm not sure who else the Texans would have selected. They wanted Brown, Peterson or Landry and all were drafted before them. They already had Demeco at ILB, and had just signed Ahmad Green as the RB "answer".

Doubt they take Marshawn then and Willis & Timmons were pure ILB with little indication of being able to move to OLB. Revis and S M. Griffin were not considered No. 10 pick good or safe. The rest of the batch of defensive linemen right after him also busted.

You could argue that they should have talked up B. Quinn falling and offered up their pick to trade down, but how much would they have asked for and would anyone, i.e. Cleveland, have bitten?

Hindsight is 20/20. There was no one else truly good enough at the pick, and Okoye was never supposed to fall that far. It backfired, but you had to take the gamble.

my bad, his statements were backed up by marcus coleman and lance z. that does it for me.

you missed the point anyway, its the fact that smith probably told him he was washed up which was true
