That was Sept 28th. The Bills released him Aug 4, 8 weeks prior, and he expressed that he'd play for Houston if we'd have him or he'd retire. Kubiak and his terrific defense gave him the brush off and a lowball offer, so he retired. Barwin went down week 1 and the Texans unbelievably did not drive him in that next morning. Only after the Dallas disaster did they admit they needed him, and then pulled that crap out of shape excuse. The guy retired almost two months ago! Why do so many think that he should have been keeping himself in game shape....when he RETIRED? And even aside from that, given how horrendous this defense was, you honestly want to pretend he couldn't have been in shape after the bye week had we signed him earlier on? Texans had to waste time and games to keep it on the cheap, going with Ogunleye and Denney instead. Stupid.
CB options in the first round just dropped by one: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6007514 This also increases the possibility of someone trading up for Prince or Peterson. I don't expect to see one of those guys fall to us at this point. Maybe one of the DTs (Hybrid NT for us) is on the board, or maybe it will be an OLB.
Patrick Peterson press conference from earlier today: http://www.lsusports.net/mediaPortal/player.dbml?DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=5200&id=744414
Normally free agency starts March 7th, but free agents cannot be signed until a new CBA is agreed upon. So, it will be the draft unless they get a new CBA in place by the time the draft rolls round in April.
thanks. looking at a few mocks and wondering who i want at this point. leaning towards von miller with prince coming in second.
Also, draft picks cannot be signed until the new CBA is in place. So, the probability that rookies will have any meaningful impact on the 2011 NFL season is very low. If the CBA isn't worked out with much lead time before the season, or if it is worked out after the season starts (short season), then the rookies will be at a serious disadvantage because 1) they won't have contracts yet and 2) they will not have been through any camps or training with their team.
I agree with McClain in the above article on all of his points (of which, he basically had none...), except for the fact that I think Kareem needs to be moved to free safety, and not Glover. Sad fact is, based off of one year, Glover Quin, picked at 112, seems to have more of a career as a cornerback than Kareem Jackson, picked at 20 (albeit, in different drafts).
I agree - I think it'd be a mistake to move your only worthwhile CB out of the position. Jackson might get better at anticipating breaks....but I don't see how he will develop a recovery speed that currently does not exist. He reacts poorly and can't keep up (let alone catch up) with #2 receivers and struggles with slot guys to boot. Seems like a much better idea to let Quin be the #2 CB, a place he should do fine in, opposite a lockdown CB. Jackson can work in at nickel and try his hand at S. I'd work him in for Pollard and obvious passing downs.
McClain is right about having to be aggressive in FA. No doubt. He's not right in saying that we should draft a CB. Please. No more unproven rookies in the defensive backfield. That's how we got into this mess in the first place. Personally, I think we need to stop trying to build this team through the draft and start spending money on proven FA's. Even if the money is absurd.
I'm not one of those guys who comes out and calls McNair cheap at every turn and McClain is right in pointing out that the Texans were 3rd in payroll in 2009. I just wanted to mention that I've come across sites with unofficial figures for 2010 where they listed the Texans as 20th in payroll. Don't know if that's accurate but thought it was worth a mention.
I just think those knocks are just the typical generic ones that fans throw out, e.g. owner is cheap, just cares about $, etc etc.
Yeah, that part was just absurd. It's not just Kareem... look at Kyle Wilson for the Jets, and most other rookie corners except for one under Bill Belichick. They're terrible! It's a position that usually takes 2-3 years to learn at the NFL level... Asomugha didn't "get it" until his third season. You'd think if any team would understand that concept, it would be the Texans, given all the youth this season... and somehow, McClain wants us to do the same thing again?
True - I'd draft Peterson if available (he won't be) simply because he's an absolute A-list talent. Otherwise, I'd focus on a position that can bring more of an immediate impact. I'm really warming up to the idea of Von Miller - a pass-rushing OLB in a 3-4 is one spot where rookies (especially those with speed) can come in and contribute right off the bat.
I really don understand this talk about moving Quin to Safety, he is the only corner on the entire team that is even worth keeping. Jackson on the other hand should never play corner again to be fair to those calling him cheap, the Texans were 22nd in payroll last season. I would have to check the numbers, but I would be surprised to see that they moved up as significantly as McClain is claiming
